View Full Version : D60 and USB Port - Different than D30?

I set up my laptop to be able to download images from my D30 for those times when I'm out shooting and I either run out of CF space or just want the added protection of duplicate files. Other than setting it up and testing it on my D30, I hadn't had a reason to use it until yesterday when I agreed to shoot a friend playing soccer. I used both his D60 (first time and very nice camera) and my D30. During the half time I decided to upload the images into the laptop and free up the CF card.

So I fired up the laptop and connected my USP cable from the camera to the laptop and turned the camera on. It gave me the message "detecting USB, loading driver"... and then asked me for the driver disk. I didn't have my disk with me so I could install the USB driver, which I thought I had already done. I didn't hook my D30 up since I didn't think it would work and I could download those when I got home.

Once I got home I decided to immediately update the laptop in case I had to use it. So I got my driver disk, fired up the laptop and hooked my D30 up to it. As soon as I turned the D30 on, the downloader came up. The USB port recognized the D30 with no problems.
My question is, does the D60 talk to the USB different than the D30? If so, if I update my USB port so it recognizes the D60, will it not recognize the D30 now?

I have a Dazzle 6 in 1 USB card reader that I thought about taking, but I figured the cable to hook the camera up would have worked just fine. So is there a difference between the D60 and D30 or is something else wrong here?

Thanks

Mike

I have a 1D, so I have no personal experience with either the D30 or D60 -- but I do have a lot of computer experience.

Generally, the idea is that Windows sees two different devices -- one called a D30, the other called a D60. Even if they talk to the camera the same way and the D30 driver will work, Windows won't use that driver unless it's listed in the inf file that that driver will work on a D60. Since your driver disk was probably made before the D60, I'm doubting that's the case.

You could try forcing Windows to use the D30 driver (select "Select Driver From List" and find the D30 in the list someplace) but it's not guaranteed that Canon didn't do something different with the D60.

Load the D60 drivers. They should overlay just fine and you still should have both cameras. Driver wise, Windows is usually pretty good at keeping files seperate and not messing itself up.
