Using my 550 and d60 in P mode I always get an underexposed result. Using AV of M it seems OK. The results are dramatic probably 4-5 fstops.

I was having same problem with 10d and 420ex. I don't know if your camera has a flash compensation option but thats what solved my problem. I was getting 1 to 2 stops underexp. so i increased the flash compensation level and works great.
good luck

I have the same camera, the same flash, and the same problem, only my results aren't consistant. In P mode I usually goose the exposure a total of 2 stops(between AEC and FEC), look and the histogram, and go from there. AV mode meters for ambient light, and usually results in a shutter speed to slow to be hand held. I shoot raw and convert in PSCS so there is room for some exposure adjustment after the fact, but I would like to find a solution to get it right in the camera on the first shot.
