If photographing events such as dog shows, should a model release be signed by the animals owner? Is the pooch considered property and where does this apply legally? Can you photograph and use the images of a persons property without a release?

Yes, the pooch is property. The pooch's paw print on an agreement won't stand up in court. Get the owner's signature on a release agreement. My release agreement has only about two lines of text. Very simple, and it doesn't scare anybody.

Then I have all of this in micro-print (Flyspeck 3) on the back of my business card. Crude, but effective.

Conk the only time you don't need a model release or property release is when the photo is used in an editorial use, i.e. newspaper, magazine, textbook for educational purposes.

Any other use of the image requires a model/property release.
