Your planes are too small...

I like the idea with the helmet, but the blown out background detracts from the shot.

It took me a minute to figure out what the second shot was. The only place I've ever seen this done before was a scene in the movie "Forrest Gump." I don't think it was a common practice during Vietnam because those steel helmets were heavy enough on their own.
