 Better be a leftover from April Fools. Either that, or Nikon wants to own something that people want.

That's funny.
Actually, Canons Research & Development budget is greater than the entire operating budget of Nikon.
Won't happen.

Because the nearest Canon model is $800 CDN cheaper. (40D).
The D300 fits where the used 1D M.kII goes.

Canon's annual revenues is 10 times that of Nikon. Never will happen. Canon does a lot more than just Cameras (photocopiers, large format printers, printers, video cameras, large copying machines, etc).

If you took out Canon's revenues from the sales of laser printer engines then you could make a better comparison.

I have said this before Canon will have to pull it's socks up one or more MkIII type cockup's could see Nikon at the top, they might have a bigger budget than Nikon but it does show at the moment who uses there budget well. Go and try a Nikon and you will see what i mean..

You can't buy something you can't afford. Canon's camera division is far larger than Nikon's. Canon OWNS the P&S world.
I don't see Ford buying Toyota anytime soon.

Give me a break.
Nikon have "survived" any number of comparable cock-ups - the three I personally suffered from being the D70 exploding battery scare, D70 BGLOD and D200 banding.
Then there were significant D2X AF issues, and the furore about Nikon NEFs having their WB and other settings encrypted as a deliberate strategy to prevent Third Party conversion software from being fully effective.
Oh let's not forget the revelation that D70 NEFs were subject to "lossy" compression, completely removing the point of using RAW...

Maybe the next generation cameras are named "Phoenix" or "Seagull", both based in China and Canon and Nikon and all the others are gone???
Who thought that IBM will end up as a Chinese company some years ago?
Everything can happen.....
Jaguar will be soon an Indian company....

do you actually have the numbers for this?
Canon spent approximately $2.6 billion on R&D in 2006, while Nikon spent $4.7 million on R&D and had total expenditures of and had $4.4 billion in total operating expenses. Canon's total operating expenses were $11.4 billion.
I think I did those conversions correctly. Those may not be exact numbers, but they should give you an idea.

But income and expenditures don't paint the success or failure of similar juxtaposed enterprises, or do they?

Has anyone heard of a privately held company making 6.1 billion in revenue in 2006 buying a company that had over 3.8 billion in cashflow and 35 billion in revenue for the fiscal year 2006? I don't watch the market that close, but I don't think this happens very often.
