what type of photography are you most likely to be taking? that would help to answer your question a lot easier

anything really, i don't have a specific area that i shoot in. i think i shoot more nature stuff than anything though.

what camera do you use? if it's 300D or 10D, then 50mm would be a great portrait lens, as 1.6x crop factor would give you a 85mm range; and 85mm would give you extra reach. 20mm would be a good wide angle lens for landscape, and left 200mm as a mid range telephoto, they will cover general purpose shooting, but you could get a "L" zoom lens to do the same, give you superb quality image while saving you carry all those primes around, sometimes changing lens would cost a great photo

i'm using a 300D. i could get the the 70-200mm f4L and ditch the 200mm and 85mm, but i'm also loosing a few stops. i can't afford the 2.8, so i don't know. also thought about the 17-40mm f4L. ah, so many choices, not enough money :(

well, if money is a problem, and your default choices fit your budget, then why not, primes are primes, they are the best out there, and if you don't mind carry them around, then there is not much to be worried about. Bear in mind though, that means you'll have to move quite a bit in order to frame your shots with primes.

All the lenses in your list are great lenses... maybe a 100mm macro?

primes are a fixed focal length. unlike zooms where there's variable focal lengths. like a 17-40 is a zoom lens, and a 50mm is a prime.

Hi guys, i'm looking in to upgrading from the crappy sigma lens i have. I think i wanna get all primes, so here is my list, tell me what u think.

Canon 50mm 1.8
Canon 200mm 2.8L
Canon 85mm 1.8
Sigma 20mm 1.8 EX

50mm f1.8 is so well priced that it is a no brainer, definately buy that lens!

Canon 200 f2.8L and Canon 85 f1.8 are how much cheaper than the 70-200 f2.8L? Primes are generally better quality, but zooms are more versatile. From everything I've read the 70-200 f2.8L is probably the best zoom lens Canon make, so the primes wont beat it by much. (I'm saving for the more expensive IS version of the 70-200 f2.8L)

Sigma 20mm f1.8 EX - This one might not be so good, the first review site I checked gave it a low rating. Personally I would consider the Canon 20 f2.8 USM or the Canon 17-40 f4L depending on what you need from the wide lens.
