With Noink's reputation its very believable. It took over year after annoucement for the D200 to appear on store shelf.
Another point is that execs from Noink stated that Noink will not be producing FF body in the near future. This was just stated very recently and all of a sudden they design and able to manufacture these miraculous bodies w/ ridiculous specs.
Yeah 2009 seems much more reasonable as a possible release date especially since they haven't stop production of the D200 and there are many D2x still on the shelf.

The specs give the Canon 1D Mk III competition for sports photography. By announcing the D3 Nikon may keep some of their sports photographers from jumping to Canon.

Actually the camera is real. I am on a cruise right now with a bunch of other photographers and Nikon sent along a corporate rep (Canon didn't though they were invited). I just saw the camera and what it is supposed to be able to do. If it is in fact as noiseless as the samples shown Canon will be in for a run. I won't bore you with all the facts and figures but it looks to be a very solid competitor. They still don't have anything in the Ds class though as this one is around 12MP.

Now admit it, you just jumped ship to noink. (no pun)
I don't know if the megapixels matter. I've used the nikon's F6 and it feels better than EOS3 for sure.
Also - 12 megapixels vs 20 - is that REALLY going to slow anybody down? I'd rather have higher quality images rather then ridiculously large files with less info.
Either way, I think I'll enjoy shooting a nice full frame body two years from now which cost me less than a grand.
