View Full Version : My First Attempt at Van-to-Car Rolling Shots

I have always wanted to try this out, and I finally convinced myself the other night to go for a quick "trial-run".

...I must say shooting from a minivan made this very easy. (Finding a quiet smooth road was likely the hardest part.)

Overall, I'm not happy with the results however. The background sucks in the sense that it is ugly/boring, but also in the sense that it's too distant and thus too static. That aside, overall these results are way too static for my liking.

We followed the rule-of-thumb rule of (shutter speed)=1/(car speed) but being Canadian I didn't even THINK about the mph to km/h conversion. Doh! We were going about 60km/h which is something around 35mph I'd think. As a result my 1/60 shutter was clearly too fast. :(

Unfortunately it got too dark before I chimped enough to realize the error. (I was already at ISO 400 and I wanted to close the aperature a touch more.)

Anyway, I realize they're decent at best, but I thought I'd share because these threads always seem to attract attention.

C&C all you want!!

(PS - This is my buddy's Jetta. I'll have to train him to shoot me in my E46 BMW next time.)

Looks good but you should scout your backgrounds so there is less clutter.
A lot of this type of stuff is done at lower speeds with longer exposures.
