Hey all,

I am interested in getting an UWA lens or a fisheye (like Sigma 10-20 or Tokina 10-17, etc.) but I'm not sure which I'd use more. I like the distortion of the fisheye, but I don't know how often I'd use it?

So....let's see yours. What lens did you use? How often do you use it? Any other info? :-)

Well, I don't have either....but, there are lens archives to see sample shots for those whoe own the lenses you are interested in.

Sigma 10-20: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=143064&highlight=Archive%2C+sigma+10-20

Tokina 10-17: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=319787

And last but not least....the Archive sticky ;)

By the way, your thread is in the wrong forum....may get better success in the lense forum.

Thanks for the help and the examples, guys. I think I like the fisheye ones....they're just more fun! I had read similar posts in the lens section, but they all seem to want to use their lens for everything, whereas I just want something for fun! Plus all I really shoot is this stuff.... I liked that lens archive sticky thing. I couldn't find the one for the Tokina, and I'd already gone through every.single.page of the Sigma one. They're good reading.
Thanks again.

I stay away from the lens section ... those guys have a reputation! I got my 15mm to use on 1D MIIN, liked it. Liked it better on my 5D. Decided I need the "circle" thing and got the 8mm Sigma. I love them both. OTOH, I also have 300mm f/2.8L IS and 400mm f/2.8L IS ... I have used them all at concerts. Oh, and yes, I have some lens in between, too. ;)

Do you only want wide angle shots of Concert footage? I have a ton with my fisheye, but I never use it while concert shooting? I love the 15mm fisheye because you can hold the camera out in front of you and not really even look through the viewfinder. It grabs so much of the action, you always get everything in.

Some of these are corrected with the Fisheye-Hemi plugin (ask Google). IMHO, semi-corrected fisheye images are subjectively less distorted than the equivalent rectilinear images (12 mm rectilinear lens corresponds roughly to 15 mm fisheye FOV-wise).

These are awesome, I love having them all in once place.... :-)

EveryMilesAMemory thanks for posting the non-concert shots - proves that I WILL use a crazy fisheye lens for more than just shows.

kmb your shots are, as usual, sweet. I love the first and third best. Thanks for the info on straightening out the fisheye ones - sounds like those lenses are more versatile (relatively)!

And 3Turner I meant that before I posted here, I hadn't been able to find the archived thread on the Tokina. Hence this post. That I love. :-)

For what it's worth, I ended up selecting the Tokina. Heck yeah. I want the fisheye look, plus I can straighten it out if I want (I'll be googling that!). My cameras can't take EF-S lenses either. Fisheyes seem to come and go real quick on the Sell board, so when/if I upgrade to my FF, I'll trade in, right?

Thanks again. I knew I could count on you all. Cheers!

i've only taken my tokina 12-24 to a few shows because @ f/4 it's pretty slow, but here are a couple of shots:
