580EX II startup sound

Should there be a startup sound when the 580EX II is turned on? It sounds like a mechanical zoom thing.
I suddenly noticed today for the first time, so I was hoping it's normal.

i don't actually have a 580ex ii, but i think it's normal. as the flash will 'zoom' for different focal lengths, that's what my old 420ez does anyway.

I have the 580 EX II and it does it depending on what focal length my lens is on like asxu said. it does match the focal length of the zoom, which is the cool thing - so yea, it's normal. no worries.

Yes this is perfectly normal if it is what I think you mean. What you describe is the mirrors on the inside moving to the FOV that you lens is set at. If you have zoom lens and listen while zooming with your finger half way depressed it will move.

There will most likely be someone else to explain this concept better than me.

not sure if you can do this with the 580ex ii, but if it has a zoom button, you can press it and it will set it at different 'focal' lengths.

as far as i know, the flash will only zoom when it is set to 90 degrees, it will not zoom when pointing up or at any other angle.

Yes it will zoom but you have to do it manually.
