I just ordered an Alienbees ABR800 ring flash and a 580ex II. Thanks to everyone in this forum! I will get a ab800 a little later on and the vegabond II. Questions though. Can is sync the 2? I saw there is a PC port on the 580, will the ringflash go into that?

There's a PC port on the side of your 5D - I'd hook the ringflash to that.

If you want to use the Speedlite and a studio flash together, put the Speedlite and the camera into fully manual exposure mode.
There's really no practical way to use both together with the Speedlite in ETTL mode. The resulting exposure will almost always be something other than what you expect, even if you get around the common problem of the Speedlite's pre-flash prematurely triggering the studio flash (when triggering the studio flash with its optical slave).

Three inexpensive ways:
1) Run a 5 meter (or 15 feet) male PC to male PC sync cord to the 580EX II and let the optical slave in the Alien Bee unit fire it. A more reliable sync cord would be one with a male Nikon Screwlock PC on one end and a male Nikon Screwlock PC on the other.
2) Use the 5M cord that comes with the Alien Bee on the 580EX II. This will require that you purchase a miniphone jack to male PC, or miniphone jack to male Nikon Screwlock PC adapter.
3) Run the sync cord that comes with the Alien Bee to the Alien Bee and attach an optical slave to the Canon 580EX II. This thread indicates function with an optical slave on the 580EX II.

If your camera does not have a chassis mount PC connetor, you will also need a camera hotshoe to PC adapter.
