According to the recent issue of Sky & Telscope (Aug./04, page 30) Canon have developed a fast F/1.8 200mm lens. The picture accompanying the article shows a typical off-white Canon L lens. Has anyone heard of this product? Price? Is it readily available as claimed?

If ir´s true it won't be cheap. The 135 f/2L is over 800, and the 200/2.8L over 600, so a 200/1.8L can be easily in the $1500 range!!. But I want it :)

They made those for awhile, but I believe they are discontinued. Unless of course they are going to re-tool and make them again. Here's a link for a used one on ebay.

Discontiued.. and probably the sharpest lens Canon ever made.

I have been searching for one for many months...

They sell used now for a LOT more than they did new.

$AU9000 is still about $US6000!!!

Dirt Cheap cameras seem to have a couple of those more desirable (ie really expensive) Canon lenses for sale:

It would be very interesting if Canon were to produce a new 200/1.8 with IS. All these folks that paid huge premiums for the older version would suddenly see their investment go down the tubes. Well, not all the way down the tubes - just back to a realistic value.

What are you guys talking about? You can still get the lens NIB, never mounted, even though Canon discontinued it over a year ago:

You'll pay a little more for it, tho

I believe B&H had these for around $2300 when they were current.
This lens is the Holy Grail among gearheads and sharpness freaks. Oh, and I want one, too.

I would really, really like to know if Canon have any idea of reintroducing it with IS during the next year. I think they have been taken by suprise by the influx of deep pockets amateurs (like me) who are buying up the 1 series cameras and L lenses - maybe Canon will throw us a few goodies at Photokina, the PMA announcements were a little disappointing when it came to glass....

If an IS version came out.. I'd be totally happy with a now much more affordable used non-is lens.. :)

But really.. Canon should just make the old lens again.. and use the old set up and save themselves the hassle. The point is that people hadn't "caught on" to the lens while it was being made.. so its sales weren't so hot... it took the 1Ds and other top notch Digitals for people to understand what this lens was all about.. (well for most of us anywya.. I'm sure there were 35mm users who loved)

Anyway.. if Canon was seling new ones at the old price of approx $3K new.. I think people would line up.

In the article I first mentioned it is suggested that the group will add three more lenses to the array (they now have 5). This is the "Super Wide Angle Sky Patrol" (SuperWASP) consisting of a total of 8 lenses coupled to large scientific-grade, thinned CCD chips. Each chip measures 2,048 by 2,048 pixels giving each camera a 7.8x7.8 degree field. Four cameras can cover the constellation of Orion in a single shot. They can get 50,000 stars in a 1-second exposure. Software can measure stars from magnitude 7 to 13 (looking for variables). A Southern Hemisphere setup is being planned.

So I guess the market will certainly dryup if 11 more lenses are grabbed by this outfit.

From the article - QUOTE: "SuperWASP uses modest lenses you can buy in a camera store." UNQUOTE :!:

SuperWASP is located at Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in the Canary Islands.

Actually, think of how cool those 4 lenses would look with 1D II's sitting behind them instead of those CCD thing-a-ma-bobbers.

Thanks for finding that, CDS! That photo goes into my "equipment" folder for sure, along with some other oddity shots.

I check back on the Cham Camera history, looks like those guys bought 3 200 1.8's from them in April this year. Must be nice.

Thats doesnt make the MKII insignifcant. It makes a 22mp medium format look insignificant.
