Hyperfocal Distance is the distance at which everything from one-half that distance out to infinity is in focus.

For instance, a 50mm lens on a 10D set at f/11 has an HD of 38.3 feet, so if the focus is set to 38.3 feet then everything from 19.1 feet to inifinity would be in focus. It is particularly nice for wide-angle lenses doing landscapes allowing you to get everything in focus. If you get down to 17mm at f/11 the HD is a mere 4.47 feet, allowing everything from 2.24 feet to inifinity to be in focus.

A tutorial: http://dfleming.ameranet.com/hyperfocal.html
And a Depth of Field calculator which also lists the Hyperfocal Distance: http://dfleming.ameranet.com/dofjs.html
