CRW is the file extension for Canon's proprietary RAW mode. You will need to convert those files to TIF or JPG before you can view or edit them. The Canon software that came with your camera will do this, or third party software is available.

If you don't want to shoot in RAW mode, you will need to adjust your in-camera settings to shoot JPG. However, RAW has certain advantages, such as the ability to adjust white balance after an image is taken but before it is converted to TIF or JPG.

Hope that helps.

Not directly.

I believe you can import the files into Photoshop using the Canon Twain driver to convert from RAW. I don't have experience with this, so can't give you more info. Search the other forums and you should find additional help.

I use the Canon Zoombrowser to convert, although I find it to be very slow.

Either way, you need to install Canon software.

A third option that seems very popular is to use Breezebrowser and the Breeze downloader. They are available at www.breezesys.com. I haven't tried them yet, but will probably make the switch.

Anyone out there have further suggestions?

(P.S. Really like your "Artist at the Met" photo. Was that taken with the G1? What were your settings?)

I have been using Irfanview, a shareware multimedia viewer. With the plugins you can convert CRW files to tif or jpeg. In addition there is a thumbnail viewer under file that works well.
The plugins are downloaded from his site and made functional by running all_plugins.exe.

The site is

Bruce,

I tried this, but it says the Canon dll file is missing. Where do I install the Canon driver - in the IrfanView directory? I guess I didn't need to install it for Zoombrowser.

Also, does using IrfanView for conversion offer any advantages, such as saving the EXIF info when converting to jpeg? Thanks,

Hello,
You could try "YarcPlus" to convert CRW files to JPEG or TIFF. And also, the software handles EXIF data. When converting from CRW RAW directly to JPEG the full Canon Maker Note data is preserved.

You can download free evaluation and see all details in the YarcPlus user guide PDF file available on this site :
http://www.pictureflow.com/

The list of Canon Cameras currently supported is...

EOS D30
EOS D60
EOS 1D
Powershot G1
Powershot G2
Powershot S30
Powershot S40
Powershot Pro90 IS
