Weve had cloud here all week whilst we have been on holiday but then of course yesterday for the wedding day we awoke to bright blue cloudless skys and hot temperatures great for the bride not so great for us photographers.
Its fair to say both myself and Jon struggled yesterday and not just as a result of the bright light and hot temperatures but also I think that photographing friends wedding is definitely harder than doing people who are just clients, we had a lot of friends here yesterday and whilst on one level that makes things nice it definitely throws us out of our routine a bit. The other complication yesterday was that half the guests were French, I am dreading looking back at some of the video footage and hearing my very bad french!
Anyway heres a few shots from yesterday huge wedding, about 250 in the church and for the aperitif then 165 for the wedding breakfast.
Polite C&C welcome but if some of the highlights look a little blown then thats because these are just camera JPG's and I am posting these from my uncalibrated windows laptop after I knocked a glass of water down the back of my mac book pro earlier today, hopefully it will be ok when its dried out some more! we go back to raws for the proofs. More on our blog if you want to see more. Long drive home tomorrow, thenw e have to pack ready to move house on Thursday, and we have a wedding to shoot on Friday, crazy times but very exciting!

Very nice. I love your point of view. The wedding cake is beautiful, very different and your angle works for me. I have just one little negatives from the shots, only the last one, with the bright light on the groom's face would need a little more pp. The shot of the couple #3 is clear and true. Good work!

#'s 7 & 8 are cool! #5 is super cute! Is it the monitor I'm on (not my regular monitor) or do #'s 3 & 4 look too red?

Love, LOVE the cake shot! And the dance one. Number 3 is nice (but not sure if her eyes are just closing)
Can't wait to see more!

Cheers guys, not sure if its because we were photographing friends but I am finding it hard to look at any of them favourably, or maybe I have developed some form of self critique disease ... either way its reassuring to get some good feedback from other photographers at a time when I have doubts about my own work.
Suzy - The last one was one of my faves but I think your right about the face so we will do some work on that when we do the raws.
CateUK - i think your right about the eyes, hopefully when I check back I will have one of the same where the eyes are fully open as I usually fire a few off.
Jessiper - When I posted them I was on an uncalibrated screen so couldnt really tell but I am back home now and they look ok to me, they do look a bit red in the face but it was a scorcher of a day so maybe thats it. Monitors due a calibration though so I will certainly check it later this week.

Very nice shots, the watermakr and frame are very annoying looking though.

hahaha, dude, I feel the same way... ALL the time. I ALWAYS feel my work could and should have been better. that's how we improve. I just wish sometimes I could look at my work and be wowed... but it just never seems to happen. :( But hey, people like us strive to improve the most so that's a plus I guess.
6 is nice but getting closer in would be a nicer shot imo.
the cake is awesome, but maybe take a couple steps over to keep the pole from growing out of it. Or... clone it out!!
nice set!

Thanks, not quite sure whats annoyng about the watermark and frame though, its something most people seem to do for web and blog images and I am happy with my current frame and watermark.

Hi BAnbert,

Glad its not just me, I hope its something that changes at some point in the future, its tough showing other people our work if we find it hard to look ourselves huh!
Agree with you about 6, think thats gonna get a crop before we do the proofs.
I think I may have another of the cake with the pole in a different place, certainly I remember moving those poles around in a few pics during the evening, bloomin annoying they were.
Cheers guys for the nice words

its a good set mate. i like the image at the reception were the B&G are dancing in the middle. did you do some off camera lighting for that one?
if so how did you find it?
dont be beating yourself up. though i suppose thats what drives us to be better.
I think ive said this before but IMO opionion you have came a LONG way in such a short space of time.
when i read the part were you say its tougher, or rather more challenging shooting a friends wedding i didnt want to believe it lol.
7-8 weeks from now i will be in spain shooting my friends wedding... on my own as well. though im well looking forward to it.
any tips you could fire my way through your experience from shooting a friends wedding. :D

I don't know. I feel that way too. I just feel that happens to every photog. I think it's because we edit our own stuff. We have seen them a bunch of times. I think all the amazing shots become ok ones after you stare on them for so many times.
Your works are awesome man.

Yup off camera lighting for the dance shots which is how we always do it, they look pretty flat if you just use on camera flash imo even if its bounced. We just use the canon 580EX on camera with a couple of 430EX as slaves using ETTL. We have some fold up light stands we usually mount them on but the 1st dance happened kinda all of a sudden at this one and we didnt have our stands set up so we just ran and stuck a flash on a speaker and one in the top of the plant, which is the light source you can see in the dance shot. I am gonna look at some different ways of attaching them to various things and maybe we will get a couple of gorilla grips as at many weddings they would be perfect and would mean we could leave the light stands in the car.
Weve shot 2 friends weddings so far this year, the 1st was only our second ever wedding and then this one in France last week which was our 13th or 14th wedding and I definitely think they are tougher than working for normal paying clients. The B&G wanted us to enjoy the day and not be shooting all day but that is at odds which what we normally do and the fact that we want to do the best job possible. I guess on the plus side they were very relaxed with us around and hopefully that will come through in the finished shots.
