View Full Version : It was an accident..

I would just like some comments on this picture as I've had very, very mixed reactions from it. The shot was a complete accident as my flash didn't fire and a bunch of other random circumstances. Because it's so dark, other than resizing the only thing I did was soften it just a touch to get rid of the obvious noise. Any comments you may have I'd be happy to hear. Though, saddly I've seen some rather rude people on this site so be honest but if you're going to be nasty with your comments I'd simply rather not hear from you. Sorry to sound harsh.. Just a new/outsiders perspective of some of the posts I've seen so far.

I think it is rather unique and subtle. I would prefer it if the red on the right were a bit less bright. That takes away from the highlited veil. Good accident. Some people TRY to take those different shots and sometimes fail - I know from experience. It is fun to stretch the limits - even if it is by accident

I like it but I find that the red colour gives it a kind of creepy feel. maybe play with recoloring it?

I've looked at that red in a kind of "should I get rid of it" way too.. but I keep coming back to the fact that the entire wedding was black and white with a red accent. I found it rather ironic for a while that the light off the DJ's lights was on red at the time I shot. The main line on the right is pretty harsh but I don't have any tools to fix that either.. :-S

Oh, well if it was their colour, then maybe the red is better left in! To tone down the brightest line, maybe a lit work with curves--bring the highlights down some? There are probably better ways, but I'm no expert! Really cool shot!

I like the accident. I guess the difficult part is the light though the grooms head, looks like a head band. How about playing with the color?

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to keep that in mind when I can get my hands on another computer. Mine simply doesn't have the RAM to edit full sized images.

I think this is one interesting effect and a fine image .I love the red glow from the lights..has a real intimacy about this moment. I had a little play with your image, for your consideration.

I'm also an 'outsider' but I haven't really seen the nasty comments you're talking about. I've had some blunt comments on some work that I've posted, but how am I supposed to improve my work if I can't accept a little criticism?

Sorry but it doesn't make much sense to say "be honest" but then to warn against negative comments. I know for myself a "rude and nasty" comment is a million times more helpful than a "nice shot" type comment.

I like it, but if you're asking for C&C be prepared for the good and the bad.

Perhaps a bit too dark for my liking, not enough detail, but I can see what you're trying to achieve, even if it was an accident. If the y were a more defined silhouette it would be a great photo.

Cheers

I think Scarlett's work helped - I like the shot

I agree with you. The "rude and nasty" comments pop up too often. There is a big difference between "critical comments" and "rude and nasty".

I love it too. And that's the thing about weddings, you can spend hours and hours planning in great detail what you're going to take, where you're going to stand, what settings you're going to use, what camera/lens you're going to buy, etc., etc., but it's frequently the unexpected things that make the great images.

I like it, I think I would try to bring out the rim light on his face a bit more

That is a great accident. The shot has great possibilities. Colour is great just need to bring some facial detail out from the shadow....

I love silhouettes, im not a huge fan of the red, maybe a sepia instead, id scrub the noise down per colour channel , and i feel its a half second slow or fast, there got the ducky lips going on, id prefere them touching slightly..But hey nice framing, cool lighting (or lack thereoff, flash recycling maybe) overall its still a good image.

I really like it and your correct about what an irony it is that one of their colors was red.

I like it as is...wouldn't alter the content at all. One person mentioned that they thought it looked like a headband on groom. I disagree...with the context of the other beam, it works fabulously. Actually, IMO, the edit looks like a he was stabbed in the head with a light-saber.

What I would suggest is a little layer work in PhotoShop.

In one layer, bring up the rim lighting around the Bride and Groom.

In another, bring down the red beams just a tad.

NOW, you have to show us some of your other shots!

Hey thanks for all the input everyone, I'm going to come right back to all these suggestions when I start doing full edits from this wedding.

As for the critiques, I'm more than open to them. Like many, they allow me to learn and see more than I would have by any compliment. But I've lurked around enough to have seen a handful of members that can fire off some words and derail any topic into a nasty spin of offense/defense in seconds. I won't go any more into that, just wanted to clear up that I expect and hope for both the good and bad any time I post a picture.

And JMW.. I'm debating my bravery and the 900+ images on file from this wedding :P

Much better... I had a little trouble distinguishing the silhouettes of the bride and groom in the original version.

It's one of those 'beautiful accidents'. It'd make a beautiful whole page in an album

I would try making it into B/W and then use dodge and burn to bring up the "rim" highlights around the faces. The light streaks are ok.. eccentuate them more by dodge and burn the make the whole image grainy using noise.
You will have a great full page background for an album possibly the first pages in an album with an intro title as I have shown here.
Insert your own text of course :)

Awesome ideas! I'm thrilled about them, seriously! I so wish I had a computer capable of editing full size images right now. I'm going to try to borrow one through the weekend and take up a lot of what you guys have said. Thank you all for your comments too!
