my boss had a request yesterday in the studio to make a musical slideshow for a client. we've never done this before and i am getting ready to leave the studio next month and start working on my own since i am ready

but i have no idea how to create one. is it possible to do this without any extra bells and whistles? and once you get it on a cd or dvd, can anyone view it even if they dont have the software you used? and is it illegal to use someones music to put on it if you dont sell the dvd but give it as a free gift with the package?

any help would be greatly appreciated. i dont have a ton of money to buy some expensive software because ive been going to school part time and working at the studio for free to get experience.

Windows Movie Maker can do slideshows, nothing fancy and it runs pretty slow, but the basic stuff. It is probably faster without any video clips being used. I'm pretty sure it comes with Windows XP and later. It creates a DVD that anyone can watch on a player that will work with burned DVDs. There are probably reasonably priced alternatives with a few more bells and whistles, though.

Pinnacle has low cost software for both stills & video... you can add your music or there music to it... i've had some success with it.

I can't believe your boss does not know of this or been asked before? How long has he been in business...hey, does he have a website, we love to check out websites...Give it a go, love to see his work...and yours too..

he's been in business for three years and never offered a cd or dvd to the clients. he has only offered albums because that has been his choice but he is feeling pressure to offer cd's with packages now because he is finding that brides choose other photographers who will give a cd with atleast low resolution images. he has never needed to do a slideshow.

and i think i told you before but after seeing what happned to mrs. opie i do not want to post any information that links back to the studio where i work. it's not even my studio and if something ever were to happen to my boss because i did or said something stupid i could never forgive myself because he has done so much for me. i am sorry but i am not going to change my mind on this. what happened to mrs. opie was awful and i don't want that to ever happen to me or my boss

thank you hef, notapro and cosworth i will look in to all of these options

Pro Show Gold or Show it Pro! about the music, it is not illegal to use copyrighted music as background for your slideshows. you are however, required to pay royalties to the copyright owner of the music. OTOH, you can check the web for royalty free music.

thank you roeddel.

rakefet has asked me a couple times to tell her who my boss is or to tell her where i work. ****is this something that is required to be a member here?**** i really don't want to share that information because of what happened to mrs. opie when her client found her and also clients come here to ask questions like the one whose photographer didn't have the photos of the ceremony.

sorry that question was intended for everyone just put it in same post oops
okay i just feel bad that i keep getting asked and started to wonder if it is a required thingy because i don't want to do it and would rather not. if something ever goes wrong with a client or i just wanna vent, i don't want them to be able to come find me and know it's me.

Adobe Premier Elements is a lite version of Premier that is a very good option and cost about $100.

Please be sure to use public domain or royalty free music, or pay the royalties. The musicians deserved to be paid just as the photographer does!

Believe it or not, I have used Photo Story 3. A free thingy.
If you just want a very simple slideshow with a song on the background. Give it a try.

Here is a sample of the simple slideshow that I made with Picture Story 3. It is not that fancy and glamorous ( I am kind of mispredict how many pictures that could fit to the song, so I use 1.5 song). I am just too busy to fix it.

Please see it in IE. For some reason Firefox sometimes give an off pictures.

Windows Movie Maker is probably the easiest route to take. It's extremely simple to use.

Yes but it has a defined but unmarked memory limit. you import a certina amount of images and audio into ait and it won't compile the video.

And you can't export that to another machine to work faster, it's on the machine that you build it on.

My wedding video is locked on a desktop computer. I can't export it. It's too big. It's just some video clips, 3 or 4 songs and a bunch of images. I have to buy a monitor for it or plug it into the telly and work to break it into 4 different segments and them import the segmetns into one video then send it out as a DVD to family.

It's a seriously underpowered program that can paint you into a bad time corner when push comes to shove. I was 30 minutes late to my reception trying to export tha damn video of our beach wedding. I ended up taking the entire box with me instead of a DVD/laptop combo.

For a simple 2 song, all small jpeg (640x480 size) video then yes, it's ok. I am just warnign you now that if you want to make a "presentation" of mid to grand proportions you will get caught out. Just a heads up.

I should try working with this file again with no sweat or threat involved.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll bring up this issue at a workshop I'm planning to attend and see what answer they might have to resolve the issue, assuming there is an answer. I've also used Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 to create a slideshow, which played without a problem in a regular DVD player and television set up. It, too, was very simple to put together.

Hey PSG...

I am not saying post pics..but show us his website..I mean, if it's a website on the web anyone can see it, its not an invasion of privacy or anything...

If he has a web site he would probably LOVE the publicity and getting his name out there more and more..You never know who will see it here...a client can look at a website any time..so for us to see it is nothing new or secret..

that's all..

Hey Roedel...whatsa matter, you don't want to be in the middle of the mess with me? geez...whatever happened to got yer back? LOL

It's all good

i guess i haven't made myself clear enough so i'll attempt one more time. if i post his website, then it's obvious where i work. i obviously don't want anyone to know where i work because of what happened to mrs. opie. when i get my own website which will be soon, maybe i'll post it since it's only me who will have to pay if a client sees something i say. in the meantime, i like the liberation of having a place like this to ask questions if a bride ticks me off or someone stiffs me. i'd rather not have to worry if the bride is going 2 b on here and know who i am. and i know it's not an invasion of privacy but it is a direct link between everything i say anonymously about the studio and the studio itself. i am sorry that this is unorthodox to you but over half the people here that i've seen post don't have a link to their website and use fake screen names.

I use "Memories on TV", and it works great for me. You can burn DVD slideshow in either NTSC / PAL.

you guys DO know that PSG retains the images as files if you create an EXE slideshow dont you? In turn your clients can reprint from this...

as for beatmatching etc, you can easily do this with Vegas and Ultimate S scripting tools, Theres even a free script which creates a slideshow to markers... many MANY options are out there..

When I make an exe show in PSG all I get is an exe file, are you saying that the original files are embeded in that file and can some how be retrieved?Surly not! Seems to me that the files; if there; would be so small as to make them useless for printing at any sort of quality. I've just done one for a Wedding which had 65 slides with fades and transitions and two long mp3 music tracks. The two mp3 tracks add up to nearly 7 meg and the original picture files add up to around 230 meg, the exe file of the show is 31.5 meg. As far as I can tell; all the picture files are rendered in to one master file and no separate picture files are retrievable. If you know better please explain how it's done.
