View Full Version : How to view the JPG in a RAW shot?

Knowing that my 10D records a small highly compressed jpg with my RAW files, I'm thinking that there must be a way to view those small jpgs without having to open them up in PSCS or C1 or CanonFileBrowser. Just opening the DCIM folder in a window doesn't seem to do it, but it must be a fairly simple thing. Can anyone point out the obvious to me?

The JPEG is really embedded in the CRW file, i.e. it's inside the CRW file, so you won't see it separately when you open the DCIM folder in Windows Explorer.

In Canon File Viewer Utility, select the CRW files you want the embedded JPEG from and choose File / Save File / Extract Save JPEG.
In Canon EOS Viewer Utility, select the CRW files and choose File / Extract Save JPEG.

Photoshop CS and CaptureOne can't open the embedded JPEG as far as I know.

If all you want to do is look at the image without actually wanting to edit it, you can go into the File Viewer Utility and click on "View | Display Mode | JPEG Preview". Then you can go into "View | Display size" and select the size you want for the display. Previewing this way is a lot faster than waiting for the RAW image to get processed.

It's too bad Canon opted to remove this functionality out of the EOS Viewer Utility. :(

Yes, I typically do shoot in RAW, for the relatively little shooting that I do it seems to benefit me to shoot in RAW and spend the extra time in Post. But, I hate waiting for the RAWs to load into PSCS and then deleting 1/2 of them anyway...I'd like to do the deleting first, so I'd like to work the jpg preview into my workflow.

BTW, what is the EOS viewer? My 10D just came with the fileviewer.

EOS Viewer Utility is the replacement program for FVU. To download the program, go here:

http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=DownloadDetailAct&fcategoryid=314&m odelid=8772#New%20Window

Then go to the "Software Apllications and Updates" section and click on "Click here to download the file" and then work your way down to the download page. Unfortunately I can't cut and paste the URL that takes you there directly as all you'll get is an "Error" page.
