Anyone know? Has anyone done it?

Only EX series flashes and Non Canon Flashes Dedicated to Canon ETTL will work in ETTL with Canon digital flashes. Manual is another story. The only limitation to using non EX series flashes in Manual Flash Mode is the sync voltage of 6Volts. A Wein Safe Sync is the work around for that.
