View Full Version : Bokeh. Are you having a laugh?

Bokeh.

Yes Bokeh?

Anyone know what it is? I've bought a 300D, half a dozen lenses including some cool ones that make a whirring noise when you take pictures while hopping on one leg and one which is an "L" and you can see loads of things to the left and right when you look at the picture.

I met a professional photographer the other day and she uses a Nikon. She had never heard of Bokeh. She advised me that some people here were taking the mickey.

Apologies, but I am new to this game. (See previous niave posts for proof.)

I am also new to this forum, so any help with "BTW", "POV" and "not fast enough" [all regular catch-phrases here] would be gratefully received.

PS. Thanks to the people who gave me the tip about the undewear and the Dyson vacuum trick. My insurer saw the funny side.

BTW = by the way
POV = point of view
not fast enough = used to describe any lens where the max aperture is not big enough to let in enough light to allow for a shutter speed fast enough to stop action and still be properly exposed (did I get that right, everyone?) ....

BTW - by the way
POV - point of view
IMO - in my opinion
IMHO - In my honest opinion
LOL - laugh out loud
ROFLMAO - roll on floor, lauch my a** off
PEBCAK - problem exists between chair and keyboard

I'll leave it at that. There are many internet chat acronyms.

The bokeh and lens speed questions require some explaination and I'm just leaving work.

Welcome aboard though new shooter. Enjoy and a teacher once taught me that there are no stupid questions. I knew nothing when I arrived here either. I will say BOKEH IS KEWL!!

Bokeh,

hmm, well actually its the cunning japanese version of the english phrase "F8 and be there", you see it should be 8okeh which if you replace the spaces (which get lost when you translate from kanji) becomes "8 ok eh" which is just an abreviation of
f8 ok, eh?

Which just goes to show that they were asking if f8 was the place to be.

simple when you know how

Best regards

JD

what trick would that be? i must have missed that one.

don't worry, you're not being had (unless they got me too!!) Bokeh is real.

it's something to do with background blur/ out of focus area in the photo. Not sure if that's all it refers to or if there's more to it than that. It's a Japanese word I think.

I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable folk here will chime in with a better definition.

Cadwell

"Bokeh" - a word used to describe the visual quality of the blurred out of focus background to a shot... what's good "bokeh" and bad "bokeh" is kinda subjective.

"BTW" - shorthand for "By The Way".

"POV" - shorthand for "Point Of View"

"not fast enough" - could be many things but here, more often than not, it refers to a lens with a smallish maximum aperture. An f/2.8 zoom would be considered "fast" and an f/5.6 zoom may well be "not fast enough".

Check this out http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/bokeh.htm , just remember it is the quality of the out of focus sections of your image. It kinda dictates how the blurred part of your background looks.

Woo and here is a better link IMHO http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/bokeh.shtml .

IMHO = in my humble opinion.

hehe, 3 posts while I was typing :D

as i understand it, "IMHO" means "in my humble opinion" , but of course these things will vary from person to person and there's no way you can be sure which one they mean :D not that it matters....

welcome to the forum, and Digital photography..

LOL JD!
You can now explain to that "PRO" what Bokeh is. Bokeh is simply what some people refer to as the circles of confusion in the background of a shot that is focussed on a subject at a set distance, and the background is Blown out. Used properly on say, a portrait or head shot where you want the background blown out, bokeh good or bad is the quality of the little circles created by being way out of focus. The quality of bokeh will vary from lens to lens, ie, a good lens should have good bokeh too.
I hope this has helped.

Any professional photographer worth his/her salt should know what a "bokeh" is, for crying out loud. Or maybe it's just that bokeh is an attribute missing from Nikon lenses altogether and hence why this Nikon shooter is clueless about it.

BTW, here's another acronym. GO ("Get out!" or "Get oot!" in Canadian - a form of exclamation, especially one of disbelief).

Next time tell her that, "Obviously Nikon won't have advanced features such as boken because it is lower class gear." State it matter of factly and keep a straight face.

By 'eck, its taken 3 posts and someones advised me to stfu?!

Moderator, moderator - I know the guy has posted more notes on here than I have "hhd" (had hot dinners) but "ganab" (give a noob a break)?!

Anyway I have posts drafted and pending on:

- Photoshop - is it worth the cash?
- L lenses. Do they look impressive to noobs, if you're colour blind?
- Whether a 70-200 F2.8 counts in your hand luggage allowance when you go on holiday?
- Are titanium Powerbooks "like so last year"? Do I have to own aluminium to pass muster?

Anyone else object to Noobs who don't take "MkII vs MkI" debates too seriously? I just LOVE taking pictures and typing forum queries afterwards. Weird, I know - but last count there was several hundred of us doing the same thing at the same time...

For the forum member who asked me to clarify the bit about the Dyson and the underwear it was a semi-serious attempt to get a half kilo of sand out of the 300D after my five year old's kite flew off while I was changing lenses on a beach. When I work out how to make a link to the previous post I will do so, but until then, hope the clumsy explanation helps.

Calm down JD, I think that it is safe to say that TQ was merely pointing out what omg stfu n00b meant.

as far is linking posts, just find the post and paste the URL (uniform resource locater) and paste it into a message. The forum will automatically make it a link if it starts with http://

Acronyms & Shorthand
Known as Chat Acronyms and E-mail Shorthand, these "abbreviations" are also used in Newsgroup Postings and IRC
Acronyms have always been an integral part of computer culture and now they are popular on the Internet to represent common phrases that people say to one another. Part of the reason they are used so much is because it's quicker and easier to type out a few letters, rather than typing out the full expression. They're also fun, but some can be naughty so watch out! To find out the meaning of a certain acronym, scroll down and look at it's corresponding phrase below.

BTW: If you ever see someone TYPING AN ENTIRE SENTENCE IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS that means SHOUTING! It is not proper netiquette to TYPE IN ALL CAPS (even in e-mail), in fact, it's annoying. if you're in a hurry (or want to do what many people online already do), then type in all lower case, unless you want to imply that YOU ARE SHOUTING!

Got a favorite one you don't see here? Suggest an acronym!

Calm down JD, I think that it is safe to say that TQ was merely pointing out what omg stfu n00b meant.

as far is linking posts, just find the post and paste the URL (uniform resource locater) and paste it into a message. The forum will automatically make it a link if it starts with http://

Yeah, I was a bit shocked for a few moments there, it took me a while to realize that he wasn't actually directing that at you New Shooter (i wouldn't expect that from timmy), but relax - i'm 99.9% sure (you never know right ;) ) he was just explaining the acronym.

Bokeh.

Besides the what the others have suggested, I would put a different spin on it. Bokeh is more of a state of mind. Normally, when you get a background nice and fuzzy, that sets the subject off better. However, it doesn't have to be a perfectly fuzzy background to be good. If you have a pretty bad lens, then you might get all sorts of vague fuzzy lines in the background, and if those distract the viewer from the subject, then that probably is bad. If you have a good normal lens, then you ought to be able to control the Depth of Field just right to get that calm background that just can't be described.

I shot a yellow flower that was mostly front-lit and side-lit, but then behind it was the darkness of a tree that had blue sky streaking through it. Due to the geometry of where the camera was and where the yellow flower was, the blue light showed up directly behind the flower as a blue blob. The blob wasn't enough to be distracting, but it put a nice piece of fuzzy color there, and other white highlights came through as little round light balls.

As allready said by many,Bokeh is a japanese term describing the out of focus parts of the photo (good, bad, yet another thing to argue about, etc)

The proper word is Boke but it has been anglesized to more represent the way it should be pronounced.
In japanese it used to apply only when describing a certain kind of dumb person but in modern times the word has been taken over by the japanese photography fraternity, and thence made it's way into the english vernacular

When you say 'bokeh' to a Nikon user, they think you are saying 'boquet.' This is not surprising because Nikon cameras do have an unusual aroma to them. They try to glamorize the smell by referring to it as boquet.

Just thought I should clear that up.

I am in the same boat as you Doc F, or will be in a day or two when my rebel arrives. I have to earn my camera gear. I actually am starting to get some income very small though. If I can pay for the rest of my rebel and a flash I would be ecstatic.

Until then I can only drool when I see the 17-40L sitting in the Black's showcase.

Here is a good dictornary that explains photography terms: http://photonotes.org/dictionary/

Bokeh.

A term borrowed from the Japanese, pronounced with short vowels. (ie: more like French pronunciation - bo-ké - versus long English diphthongs - bow-kay.) Essentially bokeh, which is Japanese for blurring, refers to the quality of out of focus areas of a picture. Bokeh can be important for portraiture - you want out of focus areas behind the subject to be smooth and as non-distracting as possible. Highly patterned or sharp-edged areas don’t look as good.

Many factors in the design of the lens influence bokeh, which is in turn a pretty subjective concept. For example, lenses with very few aperture diaphragm leaves (perhaps 5) tend result in pentagonal out of focus highlights. Lenses with more aperture leaves (7 or 8 or more) tend to result in rounder out of focus highlights. This can affect bokeh under certain circumstances, though is by no means a guarantee of good bokeh.

Mirror lenses are notorious for bad bokeh - they have annular (ring or doughnut shaped) out of focus highlights and fine detail lines tend to appear as double lines. This form of bokeh, “cross-eyed” or “ni-sen bokeh,” (Japanese for two line bokeh) is one in which detail lines appear as blurry double lines.

cf. blur, DC, depth of field, mirror lens.

Cross-eyed bokeh.

A type of bokeh in which thin lines image as double lines. Commonly seen with mirror (reflex or catadioptric) lenses.

That's because you're among Canon users - the friendliest bunch in photography.

I've made it my personal goal to add "Canon" to your signature. :)

I have been shooting theatre, opera, and ballet professionally for close on forty years. My only requirement of a lens was that it be fast and sharp. The quality of the out-of-focus area has never bothered me one way or the other and it has certainly never been mentioned by a client.

I have a small confession to make... I do actually own a point and shoot Canon  . It’s a fantastic camera but as a point and shoot wasn't flexible enough to take the kind of photos that I want to take. Indeed I've used Canons all my life until I got my Pentax SLR and from there to my Nikon.

Some people might suggest that I'd graduated from Canon to Nikon.... but I wouldn't be that fatuous. 8)

I'm planning to get a small compact camera some time later. And it doesn't have to be Canon. If I've got a Nikon, can you say that I'd graduated from Canon DSLR to Nikon compact digicam?

Nope... I will still use the Canon ones even if I get the Nikon. Since I've got CANon first and then nikON later, I still be a CANON user.
