View Full Version : A80 "Shots Remaining" Problem w/ 512mb CFC

Hey ya'll,

I just put a 512mb Sandisk compact flash card into my Canon A80 and the shots remaining counter in the lower right hand of the screen seems to reduce by one for every two shots I take. Why isn't this working accurately? (It does so in all resolutions). For example, it will say I have 1512 shots left, and then I'll take two shots, and it will say I have 1511 left. I'm not very good at math, but I know that this isn't right. What gives?

Because the size of a JPEG depends on the complexity of the subject, i have had A80 shots from 1MB to 2.5MB depending on subject, the camera is only guessing at the file size before you take any shots.

As for 1512 shots left may i suggest you up the quality a little, i personaly would expect no more than 300 shots from a 512MB card with the camera showing around 250 at boot on a clean card.

Yes, the counter is a just a good guess. Think of 222 as "space for ABOUT 222 pictures" instead of "space for EXACTLY 222 pictures".

Great, thanks to the both of you. I guess that is just a bit of a holdover from using film and expecting to know just how many shots are left.

Also, a note on the size, I bought the card for quantity and not quality as I will be spending the better half of the coming fall and winter in Rome and wanted not to worry about space on the camera and the ability to take a few minutes worth of video without having to worry where that might leave me as far as memory is concerned.

I suppose you'll be taking a method of downloading the images with you. If I don't download images off regularly, the 512 card can fill up easily within two weeks (and that's not while travelling)
