Hi, I'm having trouble deciding whether i should buy a Powershot G7 or a Powershot S5 IS. They are both the same price, yet the G7 is 10 MP and the S5 is 8 MP. However, the S5 'looks' better, and more professional. Are the S5 IS cameras actually any good?

Also, the G9 is coming out soon. Of course, this shall be better than the G7, but will it be better than the S5 IS? Sorry if that's a stupid question, but im new to cameras :P

S5IS and G7 both the camera are all the way diff from each other... if u want better zoom than go for S5 else G7 is a very very nice camera it opens new door to photography if u r new to it......
well G9 has a 3 inch LCD and has RAW capability & 12mp......
if u dont like post processing your pictures than G7 will b the better option....

Check out the sample pictures for both cameras on a popular review site, ie dpreview, dcresource etc.. Or maybe the zoom or size will make the decision for you. Ignore looks and megapixels, they mean nothing.

I have the same dilemma as you between the two, to confuse things more now there is this G9!

Guess I'll wait for G9 review, than I think a deep hole in the pocket will follow!:o

Historically, the G series has the sharper lens. The S series has the longer lens and better movies. G series is pricey.

Whether that will hold true with the latest ones, who knows? Depends on your priorities. I'm going with the G9 to carry when I don't want to take the 30D. I use the G6 now, so I'm prejudiced.

....

As someone has said, they are both quite different cameras with different features, so only you know which will suit your particular needs best after looking at the specs & reviews and handling them in a store if you can. Both are capable of taking superb photos for normal amateur use.

I decided on the S5 for my particular needs and have not been disappointed. The 12x zoom, IS and good movie capability make it a very versatile camera.

If you want to pocket the camera, the decision is clear = G7 or G9.

If you want superior video control, S5.

If you want more range, S5.

If you want to shoot from the hip with articulating LCD, S5.

These are two very different cameras that both do a good job taking pictures.

Nice comparison.
The main difference is the zoom range. So if you want high zoom than your choice is S5. On the other way G7 is one of the best powershot model!
