I just received my new umbrella from Amvona, the one with black back and white diffusing front so that its like a softbox-umbrella. I did a quick test shot with my girlfriend to see how it worked. Umbrella 45 degrees to her right, just outside of frame. Another small flash behind her, aimed at the back of her head for a little highlight. And a fan on her left because it was hot and I thought the moving hair looked cool.

1/200, f/6.3, ISO 100

So my question, do those count as hotspots on her face? What would you change in the setup to eliminate them? Any other critique welcome! (Pardon the poor background...it was just a fast test shot)

Mary Kay facial powder is the best cure for this problem that I have ever found. It takes about 30 seconds and you will not have any shine on her face for the rest of the shoot unless it is hot and you're outside!

Turning her face to camera left about 20 more degrees would have short lit her and made her face look thinner.

Thanks for the tips!

So there isn't much that changing camera settings (aperture, etc) or light settings (distance, angle, etc) could do to help? Just a little makeup?

Shine on the forehead is very hard to eliminate by moving the light because the forehead is convex and convex reflective surfaces will reflect light from nearly any angle.
