We currently own a 10D and Digital Rebel, but are looking to add a couple of "shirtpocket" cameras ... something in the 5-megapixel range ... any input on what you guys consider the best would be most appreciated.
cheers,
jim

Based on the fact you have SLR experience you probably don't want anything too "simple". Probably say the G5 or S60. Gives you control over exposure + Hot-shoe on G5 and all the same shooting modes (tv, Av, Manual, Program+).

If you do want to go simplistic (point & shoot) - S410/S500 or A80.

The G5 probably wouldn't be considered "shirtpocket" though !

I also hear good things about the new Sony 5MP...saw one last week and was impressed by the size of the LCD viewer. I'm told the picture quality is good.

By the way- I have an S400, which I like.

Why mention a Sony camera on a Canon forum?

:?:

Just a query - Why would you brought a 10D & Digital Rebel? They are both very same except the price :D ?

If I were you, I will sell te DRebel, make some $$$ for the Pocket size Cam.

Why not? We even let people use the N***n word around here (scornfully and sparingly, of course.)

I have a S45 and do like it alot, it has been good for me.

But.... If I had to do it again for a pocket camera I would pick the A80 for two reasons. The hand grip and the batteries.

I find the S series a little difficult to hold properly and I abhor the battery life that you get. The double A's with the A80 are easily replaced with the newer hi capacity Ni-mh AA's that will last a very long time.

The other features are basically the same between the A80 and the S60 with the exceptions between the size of (5 Mpixel vs 4 Mpixel)CCD and the lens composition.

If you get a chance go to a camera shop and try them out. Take a compact flash card with you so that you can compare the quality of pictures between the two.

good luck.

I have a D60, and got the A80 to supplement it. I have no regrets. Well, maybe that it doesn't go any wider, but I'll turn on panorama mode to deal with that. It'll fit in a pants pocket (if they're loose), the flip-out screen's great for odd-angle shots, and I can set or control just about anything I'd want to. Battery life (with NiMH) is good too.

Go with the A80. I have the A60 and love the simplicity of use. I carry it everywhere. It can hold over 200 shots on the 256 CF. I got a wonderful butterfly up to 8x10 with it. The "A" Cameras can be simple if you want, but still hold the controls to get more complicated if your board. Now with the A80, you'll get closer to that 5MP range.

Am I the only one who finds this statement disturbing? They need "just a couple"... ie 3-4 cameras in the 5 mp range.

The Sony DSC-P93 is an awesome camera. Kicks my old A80's butt any day.

Don't know why you would find this "disturbing." We both take photographs ... we both work in offices ... we both don't want to lug camera gear around ... but we both want to have a camera with us in case an opportunity presents itself ...

I own a 10D and a S400 .. if all you're after is a compact (pocket sized) DC to capture otherwise lost moments go with the S500
