"Congratulations! You are a daily winner of our photo contest."(e-mail received today for this photo (http://www.pbase.com/image/30373413) which was the product of the work of forum members via this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=35041) (56K warning) on the post processing forum.)
[Cheers…]
Humbly may I say that a life devoted to the perfection of artistry, technique and truth has its occasional rewards.
[Scattered applause…]
And I would like to thank …
[Scattered groans…]
All forum members who unselfishly contributed their ideas and suggestions, which I shamelessly used and represented as my own….
And my wife…who one year ago, after our tenth trip to the local camera store to see the new Canon 10D, when the drool from the left corner of my mouth had descended below my waistline, declared –
“Go for it baby. Who am I to keep a man from his toys? And BTW – stay away from those L thingees…I hear they’re infectious. “
Thank you all, thank you.

The pic submitted to the contest was based on my curve correction approach, tweaked in the direction of PacAce's final result.
Subsequently I upgraded from Photoshop 7.0 to CS. The new Shadows/Highlight adjustment makes the tonal corrections needed in this image soooo much simpler (an example of which is also shown by PacAce). I've reprocessed the image using S/H and cleaned it up a bit with Neat Image.
mttmrphy's result was also good, especially after further color corrrection. However, he cheated :) - the challenge was to use curves only - not blended layers.

Hey, Woody, congrats. Can't think of anybody more deserving than you who really puts a lot of effort and thought into his post processing. Good job! :D

woody, This is the exif data you have posted
Canon EOS 10D ,Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
1/500s f/4.0 at 200.0mm iso100 full exif
According to that, your lens went haywire and did some paranormal focal length mutations....
That's how you won that contest :P

Guess you hadn't heard about the new Canon EF 5.0 extender. Nice piece of glass. :P :P Do a search on the forum for more info. :) :)
Actually, somewhere during the editing stage, one of my damn programs dropped the EXIF data - so I entered it myself. EXIF is good stuff when it doesn't disappear on you. :x
Glad you weren't one of the contest judges. A little Photoshop touch up was allowed, but faking lens data was definitely prohibited.
BTW - it was the 70-200/f4 L all the way.
