I have a Canon Digital Rebel and I'm stummped! I do more videography work than still photo's so I'm no expert at still cameras but I don't think it is anything I'm doing or not doing?

I've been having problems with underexposed photo's. I've tried a Speedlight 420ex and 550ex with no change in results.

Basically some pictures come out underexposed, even when taken within 5 - 10 feet with the 550ex! In fact, some pictures look better without the flash or look better with the built on flash. Regardless, often pictures with the built on flash are also underexposed thus I though the Speedlight 550ex might help but it didn't.

I've been using automatic mode (green square) but have tried program mode with ISO 100, 200, 400 and various other settings.

Outdoor pictures in good lighting are great, no problem. I can't figure out how that if I'm shooting something 10 feet away with the 550ex it can turn out dark (underexposed)?

It's not all the time though, I can't nail down a pattern as to why it works sometimes and other times it doesn't.

Another thing, I took a picture where the subjects where in front of a window so I had a backlight condition. The window exposed correctly but the subjects didn't. I though the camera was suppost to automatically adjust for such a situation? Someone with a 2.0 megapixel Fuji camera (retail value $100) shot the same picture at the same time from the same location with the same lighting and their picture turned out much better!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks... Gary Cox

Can you post some pics w/ EXIF info. Have you tried manual setting (say 1/60 sec, F5.6) and keep on shooting till you get it right? I like to have the camera at my mercy; not the other way around. I am definitely not a fan of the auto modes! Failing this, there is a slight chance you have a duff camera. This is a hard one to troubleshoot w/o more info.
