new 17 inch trinitron VS 21 inch IBM off lease

I don't know what to buy.

On one hand I can buy 17 inch flat sony with the Trinitron tube. Absollutely new.

On the other hand, for the same price I can get an IBM 21 inch off lease. 4 years old. It also has the Trinitron tube. I don't know what to do.

Both are flat. Both have trinitrons in them. I'd like the size of 21 inch. I'd like the warranty and bright colors of the new one.

Opinions?

I'd go for the 21 as long as you get to see it first. I've had extremely good luck with monitors over the years - about the only time I buy one is to go to a larger size. 21" is *way* better than 17". Way, way better.


But if you lug a 72lb monitor home only to find out it's not so great, well, that really sucks. So check it first, or go 17"

If it's makes any difference... I will profile and calibrate the monitor later on. How is the used IBM gonna behave in that respect?

I called B&H and asked them what digital photographers used and he pointed me to the LACIE monitors. I purchased a 19" for about $335 plus shipping and I am happy as can be. Get a new one, not a 4 year old one. Good luck

Whoops - I don't see the M992 any more - the M993 is there, but I didn't see any indication of the trinitron CRT. Sorry.

I wouldn't buy a used monitor that was that old. Just my opinion.

I've had good luck witrh used monitors.. but 4 years is old.

Hold out for a 19" at least.. and trinitron as well... and see if there are any newer models available used..

I can't really squawk about the deal I got. It was a 21" Sony (SGI label), and it worked well enough, but was apparently pretty 'tired'. Using the calibration software that came with the Matrox graphics card, I was no able to get enough brightness or contrast from the monitor to be useful for image editing.

I bought a new 22" LaCie with spider from B&H, and the results have been much more satisfactory. I'd buy a used monitor again, but not for graphics or image editing where colors are important.

we have 19" viewsonics where i had my internship...pretty darn nice for color and graphics, at home i use LCD's though, where i sit in front of a damn computer so long, its brighter and easier on my eyes...

lacie is very good though

personally, i wouldnt go for the IB or the Sony, althought my LCD's are sony, at the time high end and very very nice, but for CRT...im gonna have to stick with viewsonic being my first choice, Ive been to one too many design firms that had desk after desk with 2 or more viewsonics resting on them

I've had good luck with Sony Trinitrons. I am using a 17" Trinitron that I bought at a used computer store along with a cheap computer that was an off lease. The monitor was at least 3-4 years old when I bought it. I think I paid something like $65 for it, so it didn't matter if it died on me a year later. I still have it after two years.

My vote goes for getting a new 19" Trinitron if available. Good compromise in size/weight/price and you are getting a new tube with good warranty. Over the years (maybe the past 16 years) I have been using computers, I've seen two monitors die on me. One was a KDS that I had for 2 years and another was some brand I cannot remember now. When inspecting used monitors, look at the top of the unit. If it has a lot of dark staining from heat, then it was probably used heavily (left on 24/7) and will probably not survive long. If it looks clean, can change modes without too much clicking (right click on desktop and use monitor properties to change screen resolution, etc.), can degauss clearly, and looks good, then you can consider going for it. But do consider bargaining hard. Dell seems to use a lot of Trinitrons and I've been able to find them on the cheap quite frequently.

i think its a lower model than what i have used, im horrible at remembering the model number, ours had tv ports and stuff in the back of them...pretty tight setup cause we all had dual monitors

id say that is a good choice though

I'd suggest to try out a used monitor yourself if you want to buy it.

It could be good, but it also could be not so good. You have to see it for yourself.

Other than that, a 21" monitor is definitely better than a 17" monitor (that's WAYYY small)

I just got a Viewsonic 19" A91f+.. It replaced my 19" viewsonic PS790 that was 6 years old and gave up ... Cost $249 at Compusa. It is all I could wish for. Bright , Clear, Sharp and it matched my print without any further calibration...
