Hi to you all,

Wonderful forum! Been really interesting reading.

Just recently moved into Digital with a 300D. Previously used an old Canon T80 for many years.

Digital has really got me back into photography.. :D
Already looking to upgrade from my 2 month old 75-300 USM, although the Canon EF-S lens seems 'fair' Will have a 50mm f1.8 by the weekend, and then its a case of convincing the wife that I NEED more..

Already managed to get a couple of pictures accepted on Airliners net, and had a request from Sweden to use one of them on a web site.
Currently looking at the Sigma AF 120-300mm F2.8 EX HSM APO as an upgrade. Any comments on that one, or should I just save for a L series?

regards

Welcome johndm !

You will love it here, but your wife will hate it for sure. Do you know why? because it seems people here are so rich they toss L lenses left & right as if they are disposable razors or something.

Seriously though, Welcome!

As for the technical questions, I'll leave them to the experts here.

Welcome to the forum. Your wild ride is about to begin. When you get the 50mm f/1.8, that first experience with a super-sharp lens will be just like dangling red meat in the face of a starving lion. There'll be no holding you back.

I started with a 10D and the 75-300 IS. Now I have.......

Well, now I have a lot more. (Wanna' see the receipts?)

Enjoy yourself and remember above everything else---this is fun. Anytime you start to doubt it, log onto this forum and we'll remind you.

Tom

Thanx for that.....currently trying to get the wife to agree to a Sigma AF 120-300mm F2.8 EX HSM APO on Eaby for £919......Don't think I'll get away with that one today....

Still waiting for the doorbell to ring.. Hope to test the 50mm at a local airshow for ground shots this weekend.

My shining new 300D had its first outing after coming out of its box in your neighbourhood....had 3 weeks cruisin Cal/Ar/Nev in a Caddy. :D
Got some great shots 'learning' my new camera....

Welcome to the forum :) Hold onto your wallet ;)

I notice your interest in the Sigma 120-300 EX. I have one. It is a fantastic lens. Sharp, fast focusing, incredible low light performance, well built - all in all a nice toy. You can quite happily use a 1.4x extender on it and get 420mm @ f/4 with no apparent loss in quality.

It also has some disadvantages these mainly being down to it's sheer size and weight. You do not want to hand hold this lens for any period of time and it isn't exactly subtle... As an example, I am going to the British GP on Sunday and the Sigma will not be going with me. It's just too heavy to carry about all day and too damn big to wave about in a crowded grandstand. The price you pay for a 300mm f/2.8 lens.

I guess what I am saying is that if you need the low light performance (and I do quite often) then the Sigma is great. If you don't then you might be better off getting an EF 100-400L f/4.5-f/5.6
