Hey can the rebel be used as a webcam? If so, how and where can I get information on this.

The Canon Rebel is a film camera.

The Canon Digital Rebel is digital. You can hook it up on a USB cable to your computer, and you can trip the shutter from the keyboard. There will be a few minor issues to solve, like powering up the camera for a long period.

As Bob partly explains, you can rig the camera to send images immediately to the computer. The bad bits are that even in the smallest image size setting it's going to take quite a few seconds for each image to transfer. And then you'll have to resize it because it is still pretty damn big to be sending anywhere.
Basically that's it- one image at a time (sent through msn messenger or such) but only after some editing has been done to it.

By no means conveniant at all
One day they will provide screen preview/movie mode and perhaps webcam ability with DSLR's,but for now none of them can do these things

No. It can not be used as a webcam. It is physically impossible due to the mirror blocking the sensor until the shutter is tripped.

Poor flip-flapping mirror. Along with the shutter curtains. How many shutterclicks does it sustain? 50k? Um.. let's see... 2,5 fps.. you can buy a new one after just 6 hours of plain fun!

Buy a cheap webcam for that purpose. DRebel is a DSLR designed for photography. You can use an 18 wheeler for your daily commute but should you? ;)

ShowMrocK, I know I'm gonna regret this but sometimes I just can't help myself so I have to ask... why do you want to us a Digital Rebel as a webcam?

In a word, Yes.

It doesn't make any difference if the mirror blocks the sensor before the shutter.

Imagine it this way. Every thirty seconds, the computer sends the keypress equivalent into the Canon software that hits the camera via USB. The camera captures that image, and it flows back over the USB to the computer and falls into a directory. Some custom software would have to grab that file, manipulate it, and throw it onto the publishing software directory, and keep up with that once every thirty seconds. Crude, but effective. I suspect that there are simpler solutions, however.

There could be a malfunctioning mirror (stuck up) and the whole thing would still limp along. If there is no person looking through the viewfinder, then the mirror doesn't matter too much as long as it is not stuck down.

I have successfully used my Digital Rebel as a webcam after installing the mirror lockup hack.

I posted the way I did it here: http://picard.ytmnd.com/
