Its my 4th post and I thought I would drag up an old conumdrum for the weekend. I use an iMac and iPhoto as a library/album directory. Its got a flat screen and this really cool metallic arm which lets you swivel it round (and knock your coffee mug over, etc). Its got Firewire which means my printer gets the data the same day I press the 'print' button. A brief scan through the Forum shows many of you to be a style conscious mob - not least those who like the 300D looks as well as optical fantabulousness.

So Mac or PC? Does it matter and if it does should I be cluttering up some other Forum with the same query? In terms of getting the best out of Canon software, Photoshop, etc., other than looks - what do you reckon?

In my opinion, for the functionality it doesn't matter at all. Photoshop on the PC works exactly the same and has the same functionality as Photoshop on the Mac. Anything you can do with a PC you can do with a Mac and vice versa - neither has such a big advantage that you'd be better off with that system. Just choose what you're comfortable with.

I concur.

Though I *really* want a nice big Mac to go along with my PCs.

This forum is not a great place to begin a religious argument about PC versus Mac.

Based on my present machine, I made my decision three ways.
(1) I've been using one type since the 1980's, so I'll stick with that.
(2) When I last went to the computer store to buy a new one, they had only one model that was optimized for photography. By "optimized," I mean lots of RAM, lots of hard disk, good video, and some apps.
(3) My personal circle of friends uses the same type, so any informal support necessary comes from them (or vice versa).

<Topic moved to General Chat>

There was a recent poll should be a few pages back in this Forum.

We seemed to be a Wintel majority here.

I'm still waiting for Cray to support graphic image editing, but in the meantime, I use Windows... Though all things being equal I would be using a Mac... (but I don't have both a MAC and Windows machine handy, both with equal software et al...)

Hmmm... Makes me wonder how well a Beowulf cluster would handle sharpening of a 20x30 print.... <drool>

Yes, I had to quit sharpening those 20x30 images once I lost the cryogenic cooling plant out in my garage.

Up until 3 years ago (or is it 4? ...or maybe five?**) I was a Mac user. I should add that I lived just a couple miles from Cupertino (Apple's headquarters). Apple dealers were plentiful. Life was good.

Then, I moved to the desert. There are no Apple dealers within an hour's drive from me except for one little botique-type computer store that functions more as a consultant than as a retailer. He stocks nothing, and is rarely open. I loved my Macs and had a significant sum of money invested in them, but really felt a lot like an orphan.

I was encouraged to switch to the Wintel platform by a good friend who had been an engineer at Apple. We had a Gateway store nearby, so I bought my first Windows system there and spent the next 3 years (or is it 4? ...or maybe five?**) un-learning all the Mac conventions and trying to figure out what on earth it was that Bill Gates had inflicted on the world at large. I'm now reasonably acclimated to Windows, and have found XP to be fairly easy to use (albeit porous). Now I live in fear that some malevolent force is ultimately going to destroy my computer with a virus of some sort---a fear I never really had with the Mac. I guess life is full of trade-offs.

If I ever win the lottery, I’m going to switch back to Mac---they win hands down in the cool department. I’ll just send Steve Jobs a $10,000 check every year to keep me up-to-date with the latest and greatest dual-processor system.

(**brain fart--can't remember for sure)

Ok – not being among the cognoscenti, I had to look up Wintel (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/W/Wintel.html).

Ok - I’ve put my stupid hat back on.

ha, steve jobs sold part of apple to microsoft!

He had to - Apple was on the edge......

...... of failing. Gates, the nice gent that he is (probably under court order) invested a goodly chunk of money in Apple.
