I saw Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000V1VG5G?ie=UTF8&tag=canon%5Fpowershot%5Fg9%5F12.1%5Fmegapixel%5Fdi gital%5Fcamera-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000V1VG5G) offers G9 $497.69. Any merchant offer cheaper than this?

It's listed at $499.99 at B&H. Saving $2.30 is no big deal when you are talking about a piece of equipment like this. I'm sure someone will post a lower price, but how much are you willing to give up in security and peace of mind, to save a few bucks?
I'm not sure what Amazon's return policy is (or anyone else for that matter) but I have never had any issues with B&H when I have had a problem.

Amazon's return policy is excellent. I do most of my online (or any) shopping there, and have never been questioned on any of my returns. They'll usually ship the replacement out even before they get back the return item. Free shipping (2nd day if you're a Prime Club member) only clinches the deal.

So is B+H's.

Didn't say they weren't; I was chiming in to Killjoy's post wondering about Amazon's return policy. Before Amazon, I'd happily shopped at B&H for over twenty years. But they charge for shipping, and can't match Amazon's "free" 2d day shipping for Prime members. If Amazon's pricing is comparable, and it usually is, then I instinctively order my gear from them.

Nor was I dissing Amazon. Did it seem like I was?

Both are excellent e-tailers.

Tell you what. Amazon credited me back the difference when the camera went down in price. Has B&H ever done that?

I thought so. All righty then ....

Have you checked consumer reviews for this place? It's mostly either 1 or 5 stars (the 5's probably coming from store employees), and the consumer writeup for the 1's (the real reviews) would suggest it best to stay away. I'd think it's worth paying $40~50 more and being immediately satisfied, than getting jerked around and ending up with a camera with no U.S. warranty, a box with its UPC cut-out, missing batteries, straps and other pieces, etc.

I've bought quite a few products from buy.com and they have been excellent for every transaction.

As for the cheapest G9, I have one on order from ecost.com. I spoke to a rep about a week ago and he said they had 20 on order at the time and were expecting 45 on Sept 15th. Hopefully, that's accurate.

They have it listed for $445.00.

Coming from someone who happens to be posting for the first time, that really means a lot.

Buy.com is rated 2.4 out of 10 the last 6 months! Buyer BEWARE (http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Buy)!

ecost.com is just as BAD (http://www.resellerratings.com/store/eCost)!

At one time, you had a first post as well on this board too. Did it get greeted with the same consideration you just gave me? Why didn't you also jump on aawil? He has two posts and thought positive of buy.com as well.

I was posting my opinion, not spam. Not sure where the attitude is coming from about new posters on this site.. but check it at the door.

G9er, I apologize if you were not spamming. All too often, I see forums like these visited by employees of unscrupulous merchants pretending to be someone they're not. And typically, they have no prior posting history. They make their pitch, and then they disappear. What made me even more suspect about your post was the fact that it was a recommendation for two merchants who have caused considerable difficulty and agony for many fellow photogs, as the reseller rating site will attest.

If you are truly a fellow photog with shared interests, I welcome you to this forum, and look forward to your continued participation. My only advice would be to be very careful with those merchants that you referenced. Photography and electronics seem to be fields particularly ripe for scammers, and we've all been burnt at least once. I would not want a fellow photog to share that experience. It's one reason why most of us here stick with tried and true shops like B&H, Adorama, and Amazon.:)

I just purchased my G9 two days ago from Penn Camera in the Washington, DC Area for the full retail price of $499.96. They seemed to have gotten several of them for each of their many stores. Since I am leaving for Peru soon, I bought retail so I could have it now. Most other places will not have any stock on them until after Sept 19th.

I had pre-ordered one from Amazon, until I cancelled it. They said they moved up the ship date and would ship 9/12. Looks to me like Canon is ahead of their original production commits.

I'm glad that you've had good luck with them. However, these merchants seem to be very hit or miss, with more misses than hits judging by the Reseller.com ratings and reviews. It really boils down to risk tolerance; "Do I feel lucky this time?". With a 70% miss rate, I just would not feel comfortable or confident ordering with them. It's also a value judgment: Is my time and feeling of security more valuable than saving a few percentage points on price?

Also, keep in mind that it's when you have trouble with a product, that a merchant's true colors really come out. I just returned my daughter's defective Canon A560 to Amazon within the 30 day return window. They emailed me a free return shipping label, and shipped out a replacement overnight (free of charge) before I could even finish repacking the camera for return. They've earned my trust over the years with this kind of unquestionable service.

Buy.com is actually a very reliable online seller. They are not some bait and switch scam camera shop. That being said, I would still buy from B&H just in case I had a problem.

I've spent over $1K at buy.com over 6-7 purchases, including 2 Western Digital 10K SATA drives for a raid array. Each transaction has been flawless.

For $450ish for a new G9, I have to laugh at the guys on the B&S asking $425 for their used G7's. I'm probably going to take the jump in ~2 months before a 6 week trip (Skiing in CO, then climbing in Israel and Jordan, then backpacking through Europe) in January.

It looks like the G9 is about the best camera out there for my needs, unless someone can tell me otherwise. My most important selection criteria: shortest shutter lag possible, creative control i.e. ISO, shutter, etc, as close to an SLR as possible, and lightweight but rugged and can take a beating. The fact that I can use my 580's on the G9 is just an added bonus.

Just ordered mine today.

Circuit City carries the G9, at $499.99. I went on ebay and paid about $1.50 or so for a 10% off coupon. I have no idea where they come from or how it works, but they *appear* to be legit and they definitely work. These guys have tons of feedback without being shut down so...

Approx $450 + tax, shipping was free. I'd like to have bought locally or if ordered at least gone to B&H or KEH or something but - the 10% off sealed it up for me and I know I can trust Circuit City, never had an issue with them.

Works for me, can't wait for it to show up!

If you are a member of AAA you can a get 10% off coupon for free for use at circuit city. this week the G9 is $479 i think. i read a post that a person used the 'purchased' discount he got on ebay when he ordered online for p/u at the store, when he got to the store he gave the AAA coupon to the cashier and they accepted it!!!! good deal if they go for it.

Down to $467 now on Amazon.. Of course, B&H still has it at $499.. I wish B&H would try to be just a little more competitive..

I ordered yesterday on Amazon and paid the $12 for 2 day shipping. I have had good luck with Amazon, however, I ususally buy from B & H but they were out of stock.

And Adorama is the supplier for Amazon and I really dont like them. I have had a few rude interactions from them on email so I prefer B & H.

Now $442 from Amazon. Ordered yesterday at $452 so now I gotta email them to get a credit. Maybe I should wait a while longer to ask for the credit and save myself some trouble since the price seems to be dropping ~$10/day. : )

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16830120219I tried Ecost and their page says it is in stock and after I order it they send me an email saying it is on Backorder(web page still says it is in stock). A week later it is still on Backorder so I canceled.

So I went with newegg. They rock! I don't mind paying tax because they are out in the Inland Empire so any order I usually get in 24 hours. Also their webpage is accurate on inventory, so when their page says it is in stock they aren't blowing smoke up your ass.

And Adorama is the supplier for Amazon and I really dont like them. I have had a few rude interactions from them on email so I prefer B & H.Adorama takes a week or more just to ship anything I order(even when it is all in stock), very, very annoying.

B&H is on top of things. They are very upfront about it and tell you on the front page exactly what days and times they are not taking orders (which can sometimes be annoying when you really need something and it collides with a Jewish holliday). Their orders go out in a day or two max.

The other thing about B&H that some do not know. They offer FREE shipping if you are a NAPP member and that can really pay off over time.
