View Full Version : Extreme III or IV for 40D: Sport Photography

I'm going to be taking sport photography - martial arts, specifically - so I'll be using the 6.5fps bursts rather often - sometimes in RAW so that I can post process and then print as posters.

I'm not really considering the Ultra II and I'm deciding between the Extreme III and IV. III has a transfer rate of 20MB/sec and the IV has 40MB/sec. I don't want to waste money if the camera 1) Doesn't need the speed or 2) Isn't capable of the speed. I was waiting to do more research on memory cards, but I got a note today that my camera will be shipped on Wendesday, Sept. 4th. I'd like to jump right into testing it out when I get it.

Thanks

Go for the best you can get with your money, however i would advise to go for the III as they seem to be more than adequate. If you can go into the shop and try them both!? It shouldnt make to much difference if any when shooting, however it will when your downloading to your computer.

Check out this similar thread tho -- > http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=303237

Thank you. I think I'll get the Extreme III, since the 40D already has a large buffer. I'll wait until Black Friday and see what happens then

Any of those cards will do fine... even Ultra II. Pretty much every card is fast enough for camera use. I still use some of old Lexar Pro 80x 1GB cards and they are perfectly fine for my 1dmk2. Card speed matters later on, when copying from card to laptop. If you are in hurry, then get faster one, if you are no sending photos forward, so that you need to be done as fast as possible, you will do just fine with Extreme III or even Ultra II.

For one, the Extreme III SD cards are significantly faster (in the 1D MKII N, at least) than the Extreme IV CF cards. Check it out:
