My first shot of this little fella in my garden yesterday. It was taken with the EF 100-400 at 400 but I had to crop it in. Is it possible to use an extender or teleconverter successfully on this lens?

Very nice Mark. Yes, you can use a TC. If you use the Canon TC though you will lose AF and yes, you can use extension tubes.

Thanks Paul, is there a high quality TC which wont lose AF?

Good shot ... on my monitor I have a bit of detail loss in the black feathers.

Thanks Colyn, the light wasn't very good, this was shot at 800ISO 1/400 f5.6. I guess the poor light may account for the loss of detail?. I must say that looking at other images on this site taken with the same lens I sometimes think they are sharper than I get with mine.

You should consider switching IMAGE EDITING on in your Profile.

I took the liberty of tweaking your shot a bit despite the fact that you do not have IMAGE EDITING OK on ;)
Say the word and I will remove it.

It's a cracking shot, and doesn't seem to have suffered due to the crop anyway.
Nice to see someone who knows the bird's proper name! ;)

Feel free Colyn, but for me it looks a little patchy. It has brought out the detail though.
