Can you get insurance on your camera equipment, and if so, where?

Can I just go to State Farm?(they've got my cars, house and business)

Yes! I have a State Farm personal articles policy on my camera equipment. They paid off quickly & without hassle when a camera was damaged. It's not expensive, and very much worth it.

Put together copies of your invoices for all of your equipment; the agent will put those in your file and use the value of them to set the rates. If you ever make a claim, it's simple if the item is listed among the assets insured.

I carry it through State farm homeowners insurance. It costs me a few extra bucks a year, but is worth it. I am not really looking for the little stuff, more for coverage for the catastrophic like the equipment is stolen or damaged like in a fire. It's pretty easy to set up. Just call your agent and they will walk you though the process.

Cool.... I already spent 2 grand this week so I can see where the money is gonna rack up and I would hate for something to happen.

Do they cover against things like dropping the camera or a lens?

They do cover those kinds of things. Consider putting your equipment on a personal articles policy rather than on your homeowner's policy. After a few homeowner's claims the companies tend to drop people, and I don't think that a claim against a personal articles policy counts that way. This is definitely one to talk over with the agent--I'm no expert!

man thats a nice gift!!! hehe .. im sure it can be insured though. typically, you can print out the price of it from a store listing and they should accept it. you will also need to provide them the serial # of the camera along with it and you're good to go.

I also have my gear insured through State Farm. Travelling around with a few thousand dollars ($Cdn) worth of equipment knowing it is insured for just about any kind of loss gives me great piece of mind and is worth every penny IMHO :). I have just about everything insured (no deductible), three cameras (includes my wife's), a bunch of lenses, EX flash, light meter, extension tubes and expensive filters. The agent needs the serial numbers, make, model (if there is one) and copies of the invoice(s) for the more expensive stuff (cameras, lenses, etc). I would encourage anyone who does not have it to get insurance, that way, if you drop it on a rock, or, heaven forbid, into salt water :(, it is covered and will be replaced.

Cheers,

I felt 100x better taking all my gear (film stuff included) on my honeymoon knowing that it was all insured. If I didn't have insurance, there is no way I would have brought my nice toys river canoeing. I made sure that when I set up my policy I included EVERYTHING. I included my tubes, tripod/monobod, memory cards, batteries, remotes, etc. I wouldn't file a claim if I lost a memory card, but if someone were to steal my bag, I would want to be able to get them replaced without spending a fortune on all the small stuff. In the end it only adds a couple bucks to the overall cost.
