Hi,

Went to see Sumo wrestling for the first time today. Always looked boring on TV but was actually very interesting live. Never shot sports indoors before so I brought the camera and took LOTS of shots. Used the 10D + 75-300 IS (except for the very first shot). I tried P, Av and M modes. Ended up using mostly M. Switched between ISO 800 and 1600; and also between single shot and AI servo. AWB only.

I've quickly put together a gallery with some of the shots. Only some cropping, levels and in some cases slight sharpening done. No noise reduction or anything complicated. Didn't really pay much attention to levels either so the colors may be wierd.

Here's one photo of the Yokozuna (the top guy):

I'm going again next week so I'd really appreciate some advice, especially from our more experienced sports photographers.

Metering/exposure on all the shots appeared to be okay. I was checking the histograms and they looked okay too (not really sure what to look for on the tiny display though ). But when I checked on the PC later, most of the shots had over exposed reds. Is this due to the lighting? Or is it to do with white balance?

Another problem is noise. The ISO 800 shots were okay but to capture action I had to go ISO 1600. I don't know how others do it but at 1600 the noise levels are pretty high. Downsized to 640 x 427 or 800 x 533 they look reasonable but I don't think I'd like to print any of the photos. Any advice in this regard?

Any other general advice?

It's seems to me that for indoor sports, you really need a fast lens. I think IS doesn't help much. I also noticed that most of my shots were taken at under 200mm (we were at least 30 meters away) so the extra zoom isn't that necessary. Therefore, the 70-200 f/2.8L is looking very attractive right now. I just have to remind myself though that I don't do this often and not for a living. Let's see if I can resist.

P.S. Wasn't sure if I should post this here or in the Photography forum.

Very smart of you to crop out the bottom of that guy :D

What lenses did you use?

:D

I was pretty far so I could only use my longest lens: 75-300 IS.
