View Full Version : Wine Glass / Spooky / Canon 5D 28mm at f1.8

I just been sorting through some photos (not had a chance to do this for a while) and I came across this one ( attached ). It was just an experimental shot to test the gear.
It was taken on a Canon 5D that a French friend brought over recently when visiting, and my 28mm lens at f1.8 and I was trying to focus on the top rim of the wine glass (you have to be pretty careful at that aperture - not sure if I managed to do it either)
I was pretty close to the glasses, and I think you can tell this by the distorted angles. It is at ISO 1600, hand held and with 'noise ninja' filter applied.
I think it has an almost ghost like quality to it don't you think?
I hardly ever use this lens at f1.8. Well, if I want that effect ( ghostly in my opinion ) now I know how to achieve it :)
Well, I looked at prices again today for the 5D ( which I dearly want to pair with my 28mm lens ), and I do not feel like buying it at such a high price (I am a mere hobbyist ) but the prices do seem like they are dropping a bit, but I hope soon that Canon will release a 6D soon so all the 5D owners will upgrade so I can buy their 2nd hand gear... :)
Bon voyage,
andrew

Please Marco Junkie can you define what you mean by 'mess'? I (and maybe others) will be keen to hear an explanation.
I like mess , and do not shy away from it just so you know - 'clean/sharp images' I seldom enjoy, and although this photo is not one that I would normally distribute in any way, I wanted to share it because of certain 'qualities' caused by the low light, large aperture and a somewhat 'light' feel to it, in such dark surroundings. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion*, but in this instance, I feel the reply was a bit 'short' and non-constructive.
* - does not mean I am hunting for praise of this 'test' shot either ;)

Personally i see nothing amazing abut this shot, think if i had taken it, it would probably be in the recycle bin, maybe that shows my lack of artistic flare? lol

Not a fan of the shot. Nothing in focus=no subject=no interest. I understand your idea, but it needs a subject. The lighting is nice, but pull something into focus, and let the others stay OOF to increase the attention to the one thing focused. Just my opinion...

I also don't really see the point of the salt shaker...it does not fit the theme...Get rid of that, and pull one of those glasses into focus, leave the lighting and color the way you have it, and you are on your way to a nice shot...

yes i took that photo of the Cut Up Orange with the Happy/Sad face ( 'Citrus Error' ), but that's besides the point for this thread : )

I was adamant that the top of the wine glass was in focus, but at f1.8 and at a distorted angle it is not easy... I will experiment again, but my friend has taken his 5D back to France now, so if I use it on my 350D it will not be as wide, and probably with more noise..
Regarding the salt shaker, erm, this was not an 'experiment of composition', but rather 'an experiment of how the 5D coped with my 28mm f1.8 lens', so I guess I should have thrown this image into 'lens' section, or explained more..
Updates, (maybe) to follow (one day...)

I figure you were probably drinking the wine, so the picture at the time was in focus. I decided to experiment. I got quite tanked, looked at the picture and yup the picture was indeed in focus and looked perfect.
Its all a matter of perspective I guess.

Well would you believe it - I quite like the shot.
Never seen one like it and for me that gives it at least some merit.
Sometimes I'd play a Jazz CD with five or so Jazz legends on it and my brother would come round and "sorry Dell that just sounds like noise to me".
Keep up the good work but don't expect alot of praise :D
