Just got today the 70-200 4L lens and I'm wondering what is the usefulness of the switch which allows to choose between 1,2m-infinity and 3m-infinity ? why not to leave it always to 1,2m-infinity ? is there any adavantage of using 3m-infinity ?

Thanks.

If you shooting beyond 3m distances all the time, the lens will focus much faster if you leave it at 3m. That way if it has to hunt to find focus, it has a shorter range to work with.

On the other hand, if you have the AF switch selected to "long", and then if something small pops up nearby but within focus range, and you aim at it, you will not get any AF lock.
