Hi, while I was out shooting this weekend I had a strange problem that I can not figure out.

I shoot with the 10D and I use 1 GB cards, on day one I had fulled up one card and 1/2 fulled the other card.

On the first card I had 2 photos that was corrupted and just figured that the card just needed formatting. The problem I encounter was when I went to check the photos on the 2nd card. I found 38 duplicated files. (Both cards blank before use) these extra files are completely different photos.

here is a screen dump of the folder containing the files.
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~markpc/Untitled-1.gif

as you can see I have added _A to end of the files, but the camera even missed a couple of files out.

Why on earth has the camera created these duplicated file?

Note: the corrupted file names are IMG_6779 and IMG_6875 <= that file being the last photo on the first card.

This looks like a corrupted File Allocation Table (FAT) in the first place. I have seen this a couple of times. The only clean solution is to format the card in a reader.

I had an incidence last year where the corrupted FAT gave a zero sized file a virtual infinite size so when it was transferred to my FlashTrax it immediately allocated all the disk space, and then some.

One of those mysteries of life.

If CF cards act that way, then you ought to do a complete format in the computer, and then do the regular quick format in the camera.

thanks for the info guys

I have done a format and chkdsk on the card, the chkdsk has come up clean so I guess it was a FAT problem.

never would have had this problem with film :) perhaps I should go to that.

but then I don't think I would have taken 980 pictures in two days

This was a big problem for me at the Canadian Grand Prix, on qualifying day, my CF decided to just umm go nuts. All of my 200 images just dissapeared, luckily I recovered them after going through a bunch of programs and buying a card reader.

My card seemed to just corrupt half my pictures, when I loaded them in PS, half the picture was there half was white or garbled lines.

The solution for me was to format the card on pc, then wipe it using Photo recovery for Digital media V3 demo. Then I put the card into the Camera, got an error, so I formatted it in the Camera and I seemed to fix it. I have gotten the problem once more since then, but I fixed it the same way and it seems to be gone for now.
