New Shooter

OK, so I bought a 300D before I saw the advert in the UK.
If you've not seen it, this guy struggles to focus on something really cool - like a street sign or a car park entrance or something. Its in the middle of a city - New York I guess, but am not sure. Like then hundreds of people - awed by what they see - step out the way so he can get the white balance, ISO and other settings absolutey spot on...then, oops, gives the game away as his lens makes this funny whirring noise as it 'auto-focuses"...like wow! anyone could do SLR stuff.
Suitably inspired, I tried the same routine near the Eros statue in Piccadilly Circus, London. I went for all the complex manual settings - even using the kit lens for authenticity. I really concentrated and put most of weight onto one leg like the guy in the ad, but you know what? Not one tourist would move out of the frickin' way. It was absolute bedlam down there. This dirty great big red bus which must have run on sulphur or tar or soemthing just kept edging closer to me beepin his horn like he owned the road or something.
Anyway, this blip aside I am a couple of months into 300 D ownership and loving every minute of it. A soon as any semblance of talent occurs - however accidentally, I will be sure to clog up the Forum site with a few thousand pixels of colour.
Any other Forum members taken in by such ads, or was it just me? Is it shown in other countries?
