The 100-400 is a very phallic lense, for sure.

The 100-400 is unique in this day and age in that it has a push pull zoom design. That was typical of older zooms before autofocus was around as it was the only eay you could really have a zoom that could be focused easily. Most, if not all (except the 100-400) zooms made today are a twist to zoom. I could be wrong, i'm sure there are a few others out there...

so does that mean it doesnt extend? coz personally i dont think id buy a 100-400 coz it looks kinda cheap

Sorry for the poor shot, taken with my wife's new acquired Pro 1 (300D gone to another home).

300mm 2.8L IS with 2.0 TC attached and a 1D hanging of the back. This is my hard working camera/lens combination that spends all its active moments at motor racing circuits.

The Sigma 120-300mm lens doesn't extend whilst zooming. It remains a constant length.

Kenny, isn't your 500/4L bigger? Do you prefer 300/2.8 + 2x TC to 500/4L with 1.4x TC?

BTW, the 1D looks small with this lens.

For example, this one:

No no, it does, just not as much.

It really depends on the lens though, the 50-500 sigma is a twist zoom but based on what i've seen it also extends quiet far.

Although if your basing your lens buying strictly on how your camera looks...then your not in this for the right reasons ;-). The 100-400 is one of the most popular canon tele'zoomsout there, i'd say second only to any of the three 70-200's.

Yes the 500 is bigger, but it is being used by a colleague for a shoot this week (bikes), otherwise I would have snapped it instead. I have one of his 1Ds's to play with for a visit to an F3 driver for some 'home' shots, so I'm not worried about getting it back in one piece.

I do prefer the 300 with TC's as it gives me the flexibility to frame anything from trucks down to bikes from the same spot with one lens. Bit like a zoom with only 3 positions. Quality wise, I can't tell the difference between the 500 and the 300 with a 1.4. The balance swings to the 500 when I put the 2.0TC on.

A TC is a Tele-Converter. The Canon versions come in x1.4 and x2.0 and are designed to go with the longer L prime lenses (plus a couple of L zooms). This makes the 300 into a 420 or 600, or if you are really brave, an 840.

Oh, and this shot was at 840 even though the Exif records 600. With the stacked TC's the camera only 'sees' them as one so you have to compensate for the loss of one stop. It was shot a F8 and 1/400 so the DOF is quite shallow.

Compared to a 300mm F2.8 it is cheap

The push / pull zoom actually works very well. I can quickly zoom from 100 to 400 in one quick push. Having to turn a zoom ring would take much longer.

FYI

Canon EF 100-400mm Push-pull Zoom Extends from 189mm to 280mm

Sigma EX 50-500mm HSM "Twist" Zoom Extends from 218mm to 305mm

These dimensions DO NOT include the lens hoods.

The Sigma images above are of the 120mm-300mm f/2.8 which does NOT extend in length and is also a "twist" zoom.

Can I just ask a question? Why does a lens, which is designed to capture light, have an 'ultra sonic' badge? Or am I missing the point??

"Ultrasonic" refers to Canon's ultrasonic focusing motor which these lenses feature. It allows quieter and faster focusing than conventional focusing motors. Sigma's equivalent is badged "HSM".

Why does a lens, which is designed to capture light, have an 'ultra sonic' badge?

Because it uses a ring-type ultrasonic motor as part of its internal AF system.
