I decided to go with the 430ex. Bought it used for a good price. For a beginnger to novice user, its perfect. It will take you awhile to grow out of it. Don't go older (imo), the 430 is perfectly fine

I've used the 430 on my XTi for about a year now... does the trick just right. I mean if youve got the $ id prolly shell for the 580 II. But i cant complain with using my 430.

Just got the 580EXII and a 430EX. I had the Sigma 500SuperDG thing but could'nt get on with it due to crazy menu's etc.

RLipp69;

Based upon my personal needs and advice from this forum and other forums, I bought the Sigma EF-500DG Super flash. I was overwhelmed at first by the control buttons on the flash and the manual (I was also overwhelmed by the XTi's manual as well). Still, I took time to experiment with each of the controls in order to understand their usage. It turns out that only a few controls are needed most of my shooting.

I'm quite happy with the Sigma.
