Can anyone offer any tips on how to use a flash like this. This is my first time with an external flash.

I'm a hobbiest not a pro... thanks

Quickly, I am not sure on the Xti, but the 30D has a custom function 14 that allows the ETTLII system to measure the through-the-lens (TTL) light via metering for evaluative or average. Average is better for the flash as the main light, evaluative for fill flash.

When using fill flash, before to reduce the flash output via the flash exposure compensation about a stop or so.
