Thinking of buying a Mac Book Pro 15inch 2.4mhz -the one with the larger video card once Leopard is released.

I have an option- whether to buy a Mac Book Pro with a glossy screen or the traditional matt screen. They say, the glossy screens are better for photography? Has anybody any experience of glossy screens and especially glossy laptops?

What do you think?

MATTE. i have the clearview screen on my current laptop and i HATE it with a passion. if you are outside you might as well be staring at a mirror, because glossy screens reflect everything in their view, making it impossible to see what you are doing. Yes in optimal indoors conditions they give richer (although not necessarily more accurate) colors, but if you are getting a laptop you probably wont always be using it in optimal conditions. As long as you can get the matte with the same resolution, i would definitely go with it.

2nd Vote for Matte, for the same reasons.

The ONLY time glossy is better is when your in a dark room with nothing to reflect in it. How often is that?

I have the glossy on my MacBook (no choice) and it's fine so long as you can control the light angles. I much prefer the matte of my Samsung display, which I use for my photographic work. There are also some who claim that certain calibration hardware has trouble with glossy screens, although the Spyder is not one of them. If there had been a matte option for my MacBook, I would have gotten it.

Personally I hate glossy screens. In press centers (not to mention out on field under bright sun and snow everywhere around) you have every possible light you can imagine, and nice shiny glossy screen, which looks so cool under controlled light, turns into crappy mirror in "a bit" less controlled environment. So matte is my choice of screen. Not to mention colors are still more accurate on matte screen then on glossy one. I agree photos look better on glossy, but I'm not after looking better on my screen, but looking better on my clients print :)

MATTE no questions asked. Glossy gives you some clearer image quality but that dosent really matter when you cant see the damn screen because of so much glare :)

Man, I was so annoyed when all the laptops (both PC and Mac) started switching to glossy. Call me traditional but I much prefer matte.

Is there a matte option for the Macbook non-Pro? The Pro is a little bit $$ for my budget and I was hoping to get that option on the normal 13.3" Macbook.

Matte is still by far the most accurate. Glossy sucks due to incredibly low viewing angle. You'll regret glossy. ;)

I will agree, from all the glossy screens I've seen, Vaios are probably the best... although I'd still skip it no matter how much I love Sony's.

Nope. The MacBook only comes with the glossy screen (just like all the new iMacs). Of course, the MacBook can be connected to another display if need be.

One more vote for glossy.

I have a glossy 15" MacBook Pro and am extremely happy with it. I didn't think I would like it but I prefer it to the other matte screens I have used. Most of my use is in a "controlled light" setting. If you plan on using it in lots of different environments, matte is probably the safer choice.

I don't have a mac but I do have an ACER with a 1680x1050 screen (matte) and another ACER 5670 with the glossy screen and I must say that the MATTE is the way to go. You can't see a darn thing in a whel lighted room in a sunny space. So GO WITH THE MATTE DUDE.

MBP with glossy for me.

Sure in sunny/high lit areas it reflects, but these conditions are great for any display really.

I love the way the glossy works within LR dark interface.

Its down to personal preference, go hang out at the store and try both versions.

Thanks all. Matte it will be. Let's hope matte is not dropped when Leopard is released. Like the idea mentioned earlier about linking the laptop to another monitor. I also had in mind booting from a remote large fire-wire 800 hard-drive which I could keep safe when away.

Thanks again.

Good choice. I went from a Vaio (gloss) to MacBook Pro (Matte) and the screen to me is a big improvement.

May want to start a poll with this one, because it will be split. I have owned both and man I am happy to say that my matte screen on this MBP rocks! I hated having the glossy screen... always moving around to avoid reflections and its really rough when you're outdoors on a bright day in the wrong place. I never have a problem with this screen, and the colors are true to what I print out... Then again it is calibrated too.
