its been awhile since i have been able to get out. that explains all the crooked horizons in most of the shots. did manage a couple of keepers though. the rest will be up later.
thanks,
chuck

arghhh I want a hard case housing so bad. I'm scared to take my soft housing into the surf, and dont know if the price of a hard case is worth it for my xti

Great shots. Man I wish we got waves like that here in the northeast. What kind of swim fins do you use when photographing out there?

#1 is definitely a keeper. It could use a little burning to make it pop but it looks great.

Nice shots. I shot a little on Saturday but then paddled out myself sun and today. Its great to have some swell in the water. (BTW im just south of you in Del Mar)

Great shots, perhaps with just a touch more contrast they'd really spring off the page / screen.

vbmenu_register("postmenu_3853827", true); zebceponaf, my housing was about 1500.00. it is the version that is set up to take a flash housing. shooting with one of he bags would probably be difficult cuz i think you need to use 2 hands. with a surf/splash housing you can usually shoot with one hand, leaving one hand free to help swim and try and pull yourself thru the wave instead of getting sucked over. it doesn't always work though. if you check the last shot of this sequence,

you can see i got too high up and went over. i caught this guys board on my foot before i was done tumbling.

sk, the original looks much better than my posting here. even the lo res on my site looks better than my post here.

i just can't figure how to shrink to the standards/sizes needed to post here.
thanks,
chuck
thx

cool perspective. how do you work it, float around in a dry suit, life vest, only shorts and fins?

Two great shots the first one is stunning. Did you manage to stay dry taking these.

Regards.
Dave.

Yeah, we haven't seen any of these from you in a while. I guess it helps to finally have surf here in Southern Cali. I wanted to take some surf photos over the weekend (from shore) but I found myself out with my board instead. Maybe sometime this week before the swell dies down.

:lol::lol::lol:

That was great.

What lenses are you using in your setup? Do you have any control other than just the shutter release?

When out in the water, do you shoot anyone around? Do you find that other surfers are welcoming when you're out floating in the surf with a camera or do they/have they complained about you "getting in the way"?

ronniea, i am in a full suit for float (and because i am a girly man when it comes to water temp) and i use a pair of short blade viper fins.

ilvwhtgirls, these were shot near cassidy street. i normally shoot the mission/pb area, but we started at ponto this particular morning and ended up looking for something better, so we ended up in o-side.

zebceponaf, i use the sigma 10-20, normally set at about 12-13 if its hollow, a liottle longer if guys are throwing in turns. i shoot with manual focus, set up before i swim out.

delted penguin, i usually swim out with friends, but i will shoot anyone that can surf well, or if some one asks me to. i have never been hassled while shooting (can't say the same when i am surfing). i have surfed most of my life, so getting in the way is not normally an issue because i usually know which diection they are going to go. i also wear a helmet (that soccer ball looking thing in my avitar is the back of my gath helmet) just in case i make a mistake.
thanks,
chuck
