do you do any processing? where are the shots placed once given to the club? who retains ownership? do you need to travel to get there? a club night usually goes what 11pm-3am? you only spend an hour there? for me 40 pounds doesnt seem like much

I had this same exact question not too long ago.
The position I got pays $75 per assignment plus expenses. (Because sometimes I have to travel to other locations) It is 80% club and event photography, 20% ad photography (for advertisers who do a weekly "Spotlight On..." business/person/service/etc.."
They do provide me with the equipment to use, if I want it. However, I just pick up memory cards, use my own equipment (so I don't have to check it back in and be responsible for it. I mean, if I drop MY camera and have to replace it, at least I have a new camera. If I drop THEIRS and replace it, I don't have anything to show for the $$ it cost)
They also pay me for any input I give towards their articles and pay even more if I write the entire piece, which I am currently doing now from the 6 weeks I just spent in Europe on a cruise ship.
I don't have to do any post processing. I just drop the memory cards off and let them pick through it. On a page dedicated to Club123ABC (or whatever the name) they generally have about 8-12 photographs. I have learned that instead of taking hundreds of photographs, I can take about 30 really good ones and they are happy. I can get in and out of the club in about 45 mins and have enough shots for them to fret over which ones to run.
However this isn't very typical of most positions. In some cases, the benefits outweigh the compensation. You can be a part of really hot and jumping nightclubs and never worry about being turned away at the door if the publication has arranged ahead of time for you to be there. Once in you can network on the side and pick up customers who may headshots, portfolios, weddings, etc... You never know. The benefits are the only reason I took both of my photography positions. The other one I do is for a travel director when he charters his own cruises. I get paid peanuts, but I get to travel for free and take the exact same vacations that the rest of the people on board are paying $6000-$7000 per person for.
Hope this helped.
