Not quite a 10D but Waisa is working on it! (You have to paint it black yourself)

Yep,

Is working beautifully on my camera, and, by all accounts, many hundred others ....

How do you install that stuff if you don't have the CF card reader? :?

Download from the net. Attach your camera via USB cable attachment that comes with camera. Read the Canon firmware guide on its site and away you go.

To be honest, it is much, much, simpler with a card reader. They are really worth getting - not just for the crack.

I am waiting to get a comp with usb 2

Then I'm gonna get a cardreader for usb 2.

If I get a usb one, I'm gonna have no use for it in a few weeks. I can wait - there's no rush for the hack

DocFrank, USB 2 is backwards compatible - you can buy a USB 2 card reader and use it now in your USB 1 port (at the slower speed of course).

this is what I am doing - i have a USB 2 reader but my mac only has USB 1. I will get a USB 2 PCI card soon.

get the thing now - it's so much more convenient (and even at USB 1 speed is a bit faster than teh camera connected directly).

just remember to make sure you put the CF card back in the camera before you start shooting!!

Why don't you get the USB2 cardreader now and use it on your current computer?

USB2 devices work fine on a USB1.1 port, but only at USB1.1 speed.

There have been discussions on the modified Russian firmware since several months. Many forum members, including myself, have installed the firmare and are extremely happy with the unlocked functionality. One of these functions (FEC) was even announced by Canon in the launching phase but they "forgot" to activate the promised feature.
BTW: the firmware installation isn't "illeagal" at all. Warranty terms are different in differnt parts of the world and the installation may void your warranty, that's all. That, of course, only applies, if your camera dies down completely and you don't have a chance to reinstall the original firmware. Otherwise, if your camera is defective but still works somehow, you can easily reinstall the original.

I just installed the hack for a friend last night. The procedure is simple and is exactly the same as upgrading with official Canon firmware.

I heard AI Focus is now available. How do you activate it?

Also, I noticed in the Custom Functions menu that there's MLU delay. I don't think my 10D has that. Does the hacked 300D now have more features than than the 10D?

Actually, AI Focus (which tries to switch as needed between one-shot and AI-Servo, but doesn't always succeed) has always been available on the 300D/ DRebel, and could not be changed in the creative zone modes. With the hack, you get the power to DESELECT AI-Focus, in favor of One Shot, which is a big advantage for those of us who focus on a subject, then recompose before snapping the shutter (thereby fooling the ever-wise AI Focus into thinking there was subject movement, and losing the focus I had worked so hard to get in the first place). AI-Servo is also listed as an option, but it is not fully implemented (search for other threads on this topic if you're interested, but the workaround seems kind of kludgy to me).

Also, I noticed in the Custom Functions menu that there's MLU delay. I don't think my 10D has that. Does the hacked 300D now have more features than than the 10D?
No, it just implements MLU differently. On the 10D, you depress the shutter release button once to lock up the mirror, then a second time to release the shutter when you want to (within 30 sec.s I think). On the 300D/ DRebel, you only depress the button once, and there is a fixed delay between mirror lockup and shutter release.

I join those who praise the Wasia firmware as smoothly implemented and very valuable. For me the selectability of One Shot focus mode has been a huge boon; although I use flash only rarely, having FEC available makes me more confident I will be able to correct over-or underexposure of the flash. The other stuff is less immediate, but nice to know it's there: I keep looking for oportunities to use MLU, but haven't found them yet. I also keep ISO 3200 in my back pocket, but I haven't needed it yet.

Good luck!
Tom

Thanks for the info, Tom! It's embarassing. I was so eager to promote the hacked firmware to my friend but I actually didn't know all the features or even how to use/activate them.

I find it strange that AI-Servo is always on. I focus and re-compose all the time. I'd go mad if I had a 300D with no hacked firmware. So how do you switch to One Shot?

I should've thought of that.

I guess I'm in a market for USB 2 CF reader now.

So how do you switch to One Shot?

Simple,

just press the "left" button on the cak of the camera and turn the dail selector until the LCD display reads "AF OS". If you try to do this while the lens is set to manual focus it will read "AF OF" and you won't be able to change it.
