I would like to convert this tripod to a ball head. Something that would lighten it up and get rid of those two handles it has which I don't like.

At 5.8LBS I find this tripod is tank. Either get the ballhead or look for a lighter tripod and add a ballhead.

Right now the only one I see fit is a 488RC2, but at $110 its steep.

This kit is nice...ant its 3.4LBS!

I would get a different tripod. The 400dx was my first "serious" tripod, but looking back I should've just saved up and gone for something better. The plastic bushings on the leg locks eventually broke down on one of the legs, making it impossible to lock in place.

Don't the Manfroto tripods have the same system that will break?

Maybe look into the screw lock system like a Gitzo?

Thx

Manfrotto (3001 and above anyhow) are solid, including the locks.

Ok. Thx. One other question.

I have never used a ballhead on a Tripod. I am reading other post of it being a nightmare for landscape use. This is what I will be doing.

Mayb I should stick with the sticks. LOL

It's hardly that. It's flexible, but easy to lock in place.
