I shoot weddings primarily and had been considering a Canon 100 USM Macro for my 5D for ring shots and other close work. Now I am wondering if maybe the G9 might produce the same results and also give the added benefit of having a small walk around camera for about the same price as the lens. I know it is not out yet, but I assume it will be just as good as the G7 for macro work since those specs look the same. Any suggestions???

I was in my local shop today and was checking out the G9. They only had 1 in stock but I think I am going to get this one to do macro shots as well as the versatility of raw and all other areas. Back to my story I wanted to see they quality in macro mode and how good it looked. So I pulled they change out of my pocket and set up a shot on the foam that the clerk pulled the camera out of. Wow excellent detail grroves , ridges, lines and reflections. Unfortunately it was thier memory card so I don't have the pic but I would say yes it would do an excellent job. cheers mate, John

The Macro feature is great. It will take better than 1:1. being a f.4 lens, the depth of field is not very good. Here are a few unedited shots I took quickly as a test:

If you shoot the rings outdoors or where there is plenty of light then the G7/G9 will make an incredible macro camera. I have taken some of the best macro shots of my life with my G7. If you are shooting indoors then forget it. The G7/G9 is a terrible low light camera. It has a very slow lens and the focus goes to hell in low light.
Here are a couple of G7 Macro shots

With the G9 and the G7 you can (in Macro) use the Zoom - that way you don't have to get so close to the subject yet get the same closeness.
That's a good thing when getting Spider shots and or CRAZY Bee's.
