Just within the last couple of days the number of hummer's around my feeders has just about doubled.
Made this and a few others this morning, but I'm seriously lacking in my PS skills, still working on the ins and outs of it.

Nice detail! What are you using?

Canon 70-300mm IS was used on this. It looked better on my laptop screen than it looks on here though. Once I learn my xti and PS I hope the pictures I post will be better...at least I hope they will be.

Nice shot Sharon. It's a juvie male Ruby Throated Humingbird. It's sharp enough, but the noise comes from it being a large crop, and it looks better on your monitor because the overall image has to be under 100K for the forum. Full quality will look better. :)

Nice capture Sharon but the whites look hot to me. Your camera may have exposed the shot for the neutral background. Try underexposing the shot a little next time to save the detail in the white feathers. You can brighten the shot afterwards in PP.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try all the advice anyone can share with me. I'm determined to get good pictures of these birds. Although I've about decided that maybe choosing hummers to start with might not have been the best choice as far as getting good shots when you're just starting out. Maybe something that doesn't move as fast might have been better to start with. :)......like "ducks", or buildings :D
But I'm still plugging away at it and refuse to give up.
Mitch, most of the hummers that are around here are juvie males with a couple of females. There's one grown male that's been here for a while, I really hate to see him leave because I know before long the rest will follow behind him. Walked around the corner of the house a few mins ago and almost got hit in the face by one. There's about 10 or 11 hummer's all total now and I'm sure within the next few week's there will be even more.

Sharon, up here, all my males I was seeing three weeks ago are now gone. They leave early so as to leave more food available for the juvies and females to find, as they are in a weaker state from being young or rearing young. Nice of them huh? :)
Since you have feeders up, take a chair out there and put the camera on a tripod. Sit in the shade and have something cold to drink. Then point the camera at the feeder, or at a branch they sit on fairly regularly. They like to reuse the same perch over and over. At first, they might be scared, but in 10 or 15 minutes they just ignore you and you can shoot your cards full in no time. Get close, 15 feet or so will work good. :)
