I received a message on Flickr from a woman who works for the "University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension in Lancaster County". She informed me that thy are publishing an article about ways to discourage coyotes near homes in their "Nebline" newsletter and would like to use one of my photos in the article. I am completely flabbergasted! The newsletter will go out to around 11,000 people. I do not want to frighten her by asking for payment, and i'm not even sure thats a good idea. I mean, credits and a copy of the publication would be well enough, but i am eventually hoping to make a living off of photography. However, this would be my first publication. Does anybody have any recommendations or experiences to share? What would a license to print my photo on 11,000 publications cost? Any other thoughts would be appreciated too. Thanks

It sounds like they didn't approach the subject of pay hoping you'd do it for a byline. I'd ask, very simply, what they are prepared to pay. Most Universities (and extension schools especially) are running a tight ship, so in the end don't be surprised if they pay nothing or close to it.

Well, I decided not to bring up the subject of payment and simply asked for a byline and a copy of the newsletter. You were right bluesoul, in her reply she mentioned that they didn't have a budget for photos. Thanks, bud.

If you want to know what a stock image would cost them register at some of the decent stock site, getty or corbis etc - pretend you are a client wanting to buy and you will get the price publication do pay for those shots.
